Step 3 - Find an image

What is a HIGH RESOLUTION image?

A digital image is made up of PIXELS or dots. How good the image looks depends on many dots are in a square inch. This is called DPI - DOTS PER INCH.

In Digital Art, we are looking for and using only HIGH RESOLUTION images, whose properties read higher than 500 x 500 dpi.

  • Use this site to find an image for your Notan Collage: The National Gallery of Art - Themes in American Art
  • Choose a theme, then click on IMAGES in the box on the right.
  • These are "thumbnails" - very small pictures.
  • Click on them to enlarge, and then right-click to save them to your H: drive inside your Notan folder.
  • Some images may need to be clicked twice - if you see a magnifying glass, that means it can get bigger - and the bigger the better! Before you save, check the resolution by right-clicking and choosing Properties - it should be a large image, over 500 DPI (one number needs to be over 500).
