1. Open a New Workspace
- FILE>NEW
- Make it 10 inches x 8 inches
- Change the resolution to 300 dpi
2. Choose a COLOR SCHEME
3. Add some shapes and textures: Think about the commercial you saw, and the images in the PowerPoint. Remember - each shape should have it's own LAYER.
- Click on LAYER on the MENU BAR. Choose Layer, then NEW. This adds a new layer in the Layer Palette in the Floating Palettes. Every new shape should have a new layer!
- Use the MARQUEE tool. Choose a rectangle or oval shape. Click and drag to create an outline of a shape.
- EDIT and FILL: make sure you change it to the color you chose - BACKGROUND or FOREGROUND. You may want to use the same color as the background, or a slightly darker or lighter value.
- Use FREE TRANSFORM: This "tool" can be reached several ways. CTL-T, Edit then click Free Transform, or RIGHT CLICK over the shape and choose FREE TRANSFORM.
- Free Transform has many options. Choose a few to try them out and stretch or warp your shape.
- Click on FILTERS. How can you use them to ADD to the image? Try the BLUR filter & LIQUEFY.
- Use the MOVE tool to move the shape around once you have your photo. Placement matters!
- Click on Opacity in the Layer Palette. A sliding bar appears. Slide this bar to the left to make your shape more transparent - or less opaque.
3. Open your photo: In Photoshop, click on FILE, then OPEN. Find it in your iPod Ad folder in your H: Drive where you pasted it.
- Once it's open:

- Use the Magic Wand to select your background, and Inverse (choose the opposite - the inside) it by right clicking and Select> Inverse.
- Right Click and choose Layer via Cut. Now you have a new layer in the Layer Palette.
- Drag your cut out image over to the NEW WORKSPACE you made by clicking the layer in the Layer Palette and dragging.
- Improve Your Selection The next step is to blow up the canvas to 300% and start doing touch-ups with some Lasso Tool selections.
- Use the MAGNIFYING GLASS to make it bigger and fix up the edges.
- If you need to enlarge it - use Free Transform (CTL-T). You need to hold down the SHIFT key and pull on a CORNER HANDLE so that you don't
4. Fill your selection by using the Magic Wand.
- Click on the background with the Magic Wand.
- Right click and Select Inverse
- Click on Edit, then Fill. Choose whichever is the black - foreground or background. This fills the selected area of your picture - making a silhouette.
5. Add type:
- Are your words creative? Jazz it up by looking for synonyms here.
- Add Text. Click on the “T” in the toolbox. Then drag the cursor over the image approximately where you want it to be to create a text box.
- Up on the Options bar you will see a small box showing the current font. Click to drop down a menu for other fonts. Choose one, using artistic thought – will it enhance (add to) the image? Then type.
- Change the size by clicking on the box next to the font. This will drop down a menu to choose a size.
- Change the color of the type by clicking on the box of color on the Options Bar. This will bring up the Color Picker. Click on a part of the big box on the right and your type will change to that color. For white, you need to click on the small black and white boxes in the Color Picker to go to the default colors and make sure that the foreground color is white.
- Add a WARP or WAVE by clicking on the small T with the bent line under over towards the right of the Options Bar. This will give you a lot of choices.
