How can I describe my village? We will start the topic by discussing what makes up our village (using terms such as: church, shop, school, green etc). We will use the sentence stems: ‘The… is next to the …’, ‘The … is in front of the school’ and ‘The … is near …’ to describe the locality of familiar places in our village.
What are the key areas of my village? We will look at a local area map and identify areas that we are familiar with and create our own key to represent these different areas. We will be using the sentence stems: ‘A symbol is better than words because …’, ‘I can see this is the … because …’ and ‘I will show the … with a …’.
How do I give and follow directions? In this lesson, we will be making a journey from the school to the park, recording our directions with a partner. We will be recording our directions by using arrows on a pre-drawn map.
How can I use language to direct along a route? In small groups, the children will go on a walk around the village using an ipad to photograph their location at different points on their journey. We will then use those pictures as a prompt to describe where we went around the village. We will be using a variety of sentence structures but focusing on the language: forward, backwards, left, right and straight ahead.
Can I navigate my way around my local area using a map? As a class we will create a map that will be used to navigate our way around the village to find hidden clues.
