Progressive Skills

Tag Rugby

  • Learn how to dodge and weave an object using speed and direction.

  • Learn how to become familiar with a rugby ball. How to hold it and how to catch it with 2 hands.

  • Learn how to use the correct technique to throw the rugby ball in a straight line. They focus on aiming at a target.

  • Learn how to mark/shadow another person and why we do this. They also have an introduction to tagging.

  • Pupils learn how to pass and move towards a goal area. Combining passing and running skills.

  • Learn how to score in rugby in placing the ball down in target areas. Learn how to work as a team communicating ideas and rules.

Throwing and Catching Skills

  • Master basic movements including throwing and catching.

  • Develop balance, agility and co-ordination and apply these to a range of activities.

  • Control a ball using hands with increasing control and co-ordination.

  • Use the correct stances for throwing/passing (over arm, chest pass, bounce pass).

Challenge / Thinking


  • Participate in team games developing simple tactics for attacking and defending.

  • Pass a ball with differentiating speed and control.

  • Select and apply the correct passes during team games.

  • Evaluate performance in a team game and make suggestions to better performance.

Term 1 - Football

Progressive Skills

  • Familiarisation of the ball: begin to use feet to move around an area and learn the basic rules of football.

  • Dribbling: pupils learn the correct technique of how to dribble a ball.

  • Short Passing: pupils learn how to pass a ball over a short distance using the inside of their foot.

  • Long Passing: pupils learn how much power is needed to pass a ball over a long distance and why a long pass is used.

  • Shooting: pupils will learn how to strike a ball and also the difference between passing and shooting.

  • Game Situations: pupils link all of the skills learnt over the past five weeks and put them into a game situation.

Challenge / Thinking

  • Keep the ball under control when running at a fast pace.

  • Change direction quickly keeping the ball under control.

  • Use both feet to move in and out of the cones

  • Use the outside of foot to change direction.

  • Only be allowed the ball at their feet for no longer than 3 seconds.

  • Control the ball with one foot and pass with the other.

  • Come to meet the ball as it is coming towards them.

  • Lift the ball off the floor.

  • Change the angle of the shot, roll the ball out and strike the ball first time.

  • Receive, pass, control and then strike as quickly as possible.

  • Limit the amount of touches allowed.

  • Make two passes before being allowed to shoot..

  • Learn the correct running technique for short distance running.

  • Learn the correct technique to perform the chest push pass.

  • Master basic movements including: running, jumping, throwing and catching.

  • Develop balance, agility and co-ordination and apply these to a range of activities.

  • Develop the skill to attack and defend in a team game.

  • Use the correct stances for throwing/passing (over arm, chest pass, bounce pass).

Challenge/Thinking

Infant Agility

  • Use larger areas of space to practice and a smaller space when in a game.

  • Use different numbers and levels of difficulty for obstacles and distances travelled.

  • Increasing accuracy of skills.

  • Add targets.

  • Increased development of communication and teamwork within a pair, group or team.

Ball Skills

  • Practise different sorts of jumps, including the standing long jump, triple jump and vertical jumps.

  • Investigate the different skills required in throwing different objects, including the javelin and medicine ball.

  • Compete against their own times and distances as well as working in small teams.

Challenge

  • Recording of data.

  • Varying rules (e.g. different ways to start games).

  • Changing distances - creating more challenge.

  • Coach less able students.

  • Balance with eyes closed/tip toes etc.

  • Smaller objects (e.g. balls)
