What is the past? Children will discuss what is meant by the past and what is meant by the present. We will look at familiar terms used to describe the past, such as: ‘yesterday’, ‘last week’, ‘… years ago’ and ‘before I was born’. We will use this terminology to caption pictures of the children at different points in the past.
What was different about schools in the past? Children will explore a wide range of artefacts dating back over the last 100 years and will have the opportunity to ask questions and make predictions about their purpose. We will then look at how technology has changed our modern classroom.
What was school like for our families? Linked to our previous lesson, children will come up with a couple of questions of individual interest about school life to ask a member of their family. The answers will be shared with the class and using a class Venn diagram we will identify similarities and differences.
How can I spot a fact? Children will be given several sources and will need to decide and justify which they think to be factual. We will then visit the old school building to draw and label, this will be repeated with the new school to be able to compare how things have changed.
What is a timeline? Using pictures, children will organise a timeline chronologically to represent events that have taken place within their school both before and after they joined. We will then briefly explore some examples of timelines and discuss how and why they can be helpful.
How has my school changed? Children will summarise their learning from the whole topic by answering the question, ‘How has my school changed?’
