In preschool, children will begin to compare and contrast characters from stories, including figures from the past. In terms 1 and 2 we will build on these skills and support children to:
Comment on images of familiar situations in the past.
To support our learning of the world we have RE lessons every week. During Term 1 our focus is Creation- who cares for this special world and why. During Term 2 our focus is old testament stories and Christmas. Through these lessons we are having important discussions about what people believe and the children are learning to recognise some similarities and differences between religions and civilisations. Our learning in RE also supports children to comment on familiar situations from the past to now. In addition to this we celebrate Harvest Festival, learn about Fireworks night and what Poppy Day means as well as preparing for our KS1 nativity.
Topic: All about me – term 1
Our topic is ‘all about me’; we will read stories about family and discuss members of our own family, describing the people who are familiar to us. This will also help us to think about the past and present.
Topic: People who help us – term 2
Our topic is 'people who help us'. We will read stories about the different jobs people have so the children can learn about the people in their community.
In preschool, children will begin to make sense of their own life story and family’s history, show interest in different occupations and explore how things work. They will continue developing positive attitudes about the differences between people and start to know that there are different countries in the world and talk about the differences they have experienced or seen in photos. They will begin to draw information from a simple map. In terms 1 and 2 we will build on these skills and support the children to:
Talk about members of their immediate family and community.
Name and describe people who are familiar to them.
Recognise some similarities and differences between religions and civilisations.

In preschool children will begin to use all their senses in hands-on exploration of natural materials and explore collections of materials with similar and/or different properties. They will start to talk about what they see, using a wide vocabulary and perhaps enjoy planting seeds and caring for growing plants. They will start learning to understand the key features of the life cycle of a plant and an animal and begin to understand the need to respect and care for the natural environment and all living things. Children start to explore and talk about different forces they can feel and talk about the differences between materials and changes they notice.
Draw information from a simple map.
Explore the natural world around them.
Children develop their knowledge of the natural world through exploring in the outdoors at both child initiated time as well as at break times and lunch times. This learning is enhanced through adult interactions and available resources. Map books, fiction books and nonfiction books are available to support this learning. For example, at the end of term 1 we read Pumpkin Jack which is all about the life cycle of a pumpkin and decomposition, and supports learning about seasons. In term 2 we will also look at books about seasons such as goodbye autumn hello winter, animals in winter and what can you see in winter as well as stories about hibernation; Robins Winter Song and The Very Long Sleep.
