To support our learning of the world we have RE lessons every week. During Term 1 our focus is Creation- who cares for this special world and why. During Term 2 our focus is old testament stories and Christmas. Through these lessons we are having important discussions about what people believe and the children are learning to recognise some similarities and differences between religions and civilisations. Our learning in RE also supports children to comment on familiar situations from the past to now.
In preschool, children will begin to make sense of their own life story and family’s history, show interest in different occupations and explore how things work. They will continue developing positive attitudes about the differences between people and start to know that there are different countries in the world and talk about the differences they have experienced or seen in photos. They will begin to draw information from a simple map. In terms 1 and 2 we will build on these skills and support the children to:
Talk about members of their immediate family and community (Family; ME)
Name and describe people who are familiar to them (Family)
Recognise some similarities and differences between life in this country and life in other countries (Diwali; Christmas around the world)
Recognise that people have different beliefs and celebrate special times in different ways (Diwali; Christmas around the world)
Understand that some places are special to members of their community (Church; Christmas; Diwali, Remembrance Day; School)
In preschool children will begin to use all their senses in hands-on exploration of natural materials and explore collections of materials with similar and/or different properties. They will start to talk about what they see, using a wide vocabulary and perhaps enjoy planting seeds and caring for growing plants. They will start learning to understand the key features of the life cycle of a plant and an animal and begin to understand the need to respect and care for the natural environment and all living things. Children start to explore and talk about different forces they can feel and talk about the differences between materials and changes they notice.
Explore the natural world around them (School; Autumn)
Describe what they see, hear and feel whilst outside (Autumn walk)
Understand the effect of changing seasons on the natural world around them (Autumn)
