During preschool children begin to develop appropriate ways of being assertive and they will begin to understand how others might be feeling. They will have learnt to talk about their feelings, using words like 'happy', 'sad', 'angry' or 'worried'.
During Terms 1 and 2 we will build on these skills and support the children to:
Express their feelings and consider the feelings of others.
Develop appropriate ways to be assertive.
Talk with others to solve conflicts.
This will be supported with embedded practice from the adults around them as we reinforce the Barn Owls Class Rules, use sand timers to help share resources, support children to use their words to resolve conflict and to name their feelings to help them self-regulate.
Our SCARF scheme supports the children's personal, social and emotional development further, as learning in this area is enhanced with weekly PSHE lessons.
In term 1 the learning will revolve around 'me and my relationships' which links in with our topic, 'all about me'.
In term 2, our PSHE learning will be 'valuing difference' which will build on our 'all about me topic' as well as support our topic in term 2 which is 'people who help us'.
During preschool children learn to play with one or more other children, extending and elaborating play ideas, find solutions to conflicts and rivalries, and begin to remember and follow rules with some understanding. They will also begin to be increasingly independent in meeting their own care needs.
During Terms 1 and 2 we will build on these skills and support the children to:
Remember rules without needing an adult to remind them, understanding why they are important.
Show resilience and perseverance in the face of challenge.
Be increasingly independent in meeting their own care needs.
We will support the children’s independence with their selfcare such as getting themselves ready for lunch, getting their things together at the end of the day, putting on and taking off their own jumper, changing into their wellies etc. These self-care tasks will develop and enhance their resilience and perseverance in the face of challenge as they become increasingly independent in meeting their own care needs. The teaching team will be consistent within Barn Owls Class rules to enable the children to be independent at implementing them.
During preschool children develop their sense of responsibility and membership of a community, become more outgoing with unfamiliar people, in the safe context of their setting and begin to show more confidence in new social situations.
During Terms 1 and 2 we will build on these skills and support the children to:
Build constructive and respectful relationships.
The teaching team in Barn Owls will develop relationships with all children, getting to know them, as well as supporting them to develop respectful relationships with each other and their buddies. We will be consistent with the Hippo Class rules, modeling appropriate behavior such as ways to solve conflicts and turn taking, reinforcing the use of sand timers.
