Building a Plan

Learning Goal: Create a plan of action to address a problem.

Developing a Plan requires strategic planning for when critical elements of the project will be completed. Project management is multi-faceted and extremely difficult to learn because no two project require the same ingredients to be successful. To address this we will learn a couple of steps you can take to be better prepared for outlining future projects.

Things to Consider When Developing a Plan

  • Duration & Usable Days – Start with the beginning and end date for the project. How many days do you have available to to work on the project.
  • Problem – Write out the Plan. “I am developing (definition) to help (targeted audience) (solve a problem).”
  • Major Milestones – Once you are comfortable with the big picture you may start drilling down to the specifics.

  • Minor Activities – Drill down from your major tasks and determine who is responsible for the tasksand when they will be due.

  • Schedule Control – Use the calendar to track the progress of the project. Adjustments will have to made but most importantly, people will have to put more time in as needed.

Wrapping it up

  • The goal of the planning phase is to better understand who, what, why and when of your startup needs.

At this stage in the development of the problem-solving process you should be able to complete the following statement:

"I am developing (definition) to help (targeted audience) (solve a problem)."
