Prefects & Head Prefects
At South Island School, we have a well established prefect system, where Year 12 and Year 13 students are assigned key positions of responsibility to help with the effective and efficient day to day running of the school. Who are Prefects? Who are Head Prefects?
Prefects are students who are selected from the senior years to primarily act as role models to the rest of the school through their regular involvement in school initiatives. This includes assisting staff with daily duties around the school, with Parent’s Evenings, School Concerts and other performances and events; they form an integral part of the leadership of the School.
Head Prefects are a team of 8 students who lead these prefect teams - they are selected through a rigorous application process that concludes with a final interview for a selected short-list with the Principal, School Council Members and other senior staff and attend School Council, Student Council and PTA Meetings to represent the student body. In addition, they are responsible for organising initiatives targeting the overall improvement of student life at South Island, of which some are listed below!

What do Head Prefects and the prefect teams do?
Some initiatives the Head Prefects are responsible for are:
Christmas/End of Year Assemblies
Prefect duties at Parent evenings and Conferences
South Island Council Association (SICA)
Bauhinia Introduction activities (led by our Buahinia head prefects; learn more here)
Promoting awareness regarding social distancing measures
and several other overall wellbeing activities, like performances, school tours, etc. as well as representing the student body at School Council meetings
Our unwavering aim is to embody South Island’s Making a Difference philosophy and to ensure that you all are in a supportive, empowering environment to feel capable of doing the same. This year, we strive to prioritise student leadership, mental health, sustainability, and creative expression throughout the lived experiences at SIS. Stay tuned for more initiatives to come!

How can I become a Prefect/Head Prefect?
To become a prefect or head prefect at South Island, all you have to do is apply!
Here is a rough outline of the selection process, as well as a handbook with handy details about what being a prefect entails:
