Y9 Peer Mentors

The Y9 SIS Peer Mentoring programme was launched in September 2021.

Research tells us that if young people need support they are more likely to turn to a friend rather than an adult for help and support. Therefore, at South Island we want to ensure our students are well equipped with skills to help each other when we face challenges. The SIS Peer Mentoring programme aims to enhance student's social and emotional skills whilst fostering a culture of openness and mutual trust

The SIS Peer Mentor program is a one-year, school-wide program. Students in Year 9 are invited to apply to complete a 6 week training course led by our school counsellors.

The training programme teaches:

  • Active Listening

  • How to develop trust and empathy

  • How to create meaningful dialogue

  • Confidentiality + Teacher support.

All mentors will undergo training and practice life-long skills and knowledge, including leadership skills, organisational skills, and social-emotional skills.

Each peer mentor will be matched with one or two Year 7 students and will serve as a role model and source of support and encouragement for them. Besides practicing leadership skills, peer mentors will learn more about responsibility, being punctual/organised, and how to be respectful and kind towards others. The goal is for Peer Mentors to help the Y7s develop their self-management skills, set personal goals and boost their confidence.

The programme is running again in this academic year. Y9 students were invited to apply for the programme in a recent assembly. For more information about the programme please contact one of the SIS Peer Mentoring team:
