Well-Being Council

The Well-Being Council is a relatively new council set up in 2022, aimed at hosting events and raising awareness about the importance of taking care of our mental health as well as our physical health. A main event that our council hosts is the annual Mental Health Awareness Week, which is set close in date to the World Mental Health Day on the 10th of October. This year, the MHAW is set from the 30th of October to the 3rd of November

Our council is made up of the main council and tutor group representatives. This allows more effective communication between year groups, creating an opportunity for younger students to be more involved, and gives a taste of what student leadership in South Island School looks like.

For the main council, we are currently recruiting more year 10-13 students to join us, so if you are passionate about mental health and want to help out, please email the heads or Ms. Purves and we will get back to you soon!

What impact do we make?

By removing the stigma around mental health and advocating for it, we create a more supportive and inclusive school environment where students feel comfortable in seeking comfortable help and support when they need it. By raising awareness about mental health it can also help to increase understanding and reduce misconceptions about mental health issues. This can lead to improved attitudes towards mental health and a greater willingness to seak help and support.

Improving access to resources and providing education on mental health can also have a significant impact. By providing students with access to resources such as counselling services and mental health support groups, we help them receive the care and support they need to manage their mental health. It can also help equip them with the right knowledge and skills to take care of their own as well as support others who may be struggling.
