Sustainability Council

The sustainability council believes in implementing sustainability into the SIS’ community. We use our three pillars to assist our goals as a council (The Energy pillar, Waste pillar, and Awareness pillar). We as a council work to implement initiatives which follow our aim throughout the school year.

We Make A Difference through our initiatives which help enrich sustainability in our SIS community and through the process of our initiatives themselves. This is by including different year groups into the development of our initiatives (through our ambassadors), letting them get the opportunity to build their skills and Make A Difference.

Head Team:

Teacher supervisor: Ms McKeown and Ms Lyndon

Student heads: Amaanat REKHI (12N2), Dayeon LEE (13N1),  Sophie CHAN (12M1), Hayley WONG (12S1)

What We Do:

SusCo is at the forefront of promoting sustainability and environmental awareness at South Island School. The initiatives and action being taken include:

This year, we aim to hold more Green Weeks for students in all year groups to get involved with promoting sustainability. We also plan to implement some new initiatives including turning notebooks into loose leaf paper, paper recycling by partnering with external stakeholders, as well as creating more awareness about how to be more sustainable around the school community.

What Impact do we make:

We make the school community sustainable, surrounded by a cleaner environment. Use of disposable waste can soon be reduced to a minimum, or better yet, eliminated.

We also all benefit from actions that bring us a step closer to sustainability. Every student participating in our projects will develop a better understanding of what sustainability is, its importance, and how it can be achieved. Charities we work with make our efforts have a widespread impact, raising awareness and encouraging people outside of our school to make a difference too.

Achieving sustainability requires every individual to come together. Every initiative that we implement, we send a powerful message; that with everyone working together, our goal to completely transform SIS into an eco-friendly school is easier to accomplish.

Meetings:

Every Wednesday at C33

How to join:

We will recruit SusCo members in term one for students to be involved directly. Here, interviews will be held to make sure students involved are passionate about sustainability. Questions such as : what qualities do you have that make you an important member. Why do you think it’s important for the school to have a sustainability council?

Moreover the sustainability council will hold events at school in which students can be involved, such as textbook donations and green days.

For collaborations, students can email one of the heads, or simply come join our meetings which are held every Wednesday break to propose their ideas, where SusCo heads and members will access and give suggestions.
