Office 365 has been around since June 28, 2011. It was initially released by Microsoft as a subscription-based software service that provided access to various Microsoft Office applications (such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) along with other productivity services. Over time, Office 365 evolved and was eventually rebranded as Microsoft 365 in April 2020.
how long has google workspace been around (I realise it was called different names back when it started). It took Microsoft 5 years to catch up to Google in terms of online software.
Google Workspace, formerly known as G Suite, was introduced by Google on August 28, 2006. Initially, it was called Google Apps for Your Domain, then it was rebranded as Google Apps, and later renamed G Suite in 2016. Finally, in October 2020, it was rebranded again as Google Workspace. So, Google's suite of productivity and collaboration tools has been around for over a decade, evolving and expanding its features over time.
I would say in the last 5 years, organisations have moved from the Desktop version of Word and Excel to the Online version. This in itself was a huge transformation. Google copied the Microsoft apps and put them in the cloud as Software as a Service (SaaS).
Digital transformation is like a big makeover for a company, but instead of new clothes and hairstyles, the company gets new digital tools and ways to do things. It's super important for a bunch of reasons:
Into Business Models: Imagine a business model as a game plan for how a company makes money. Adding digital technology is like adding a superstar player to your team. Now you can do cool stuff like online sales, which means you can reach more people.
Into Processes: Processes are the steps a company takes to get things done. If those steps are old and slow, adding digital tools can speed things up. Like, using software to keep track of inventory instead of counting boxes by hand.
Into Cultural Practice: This means changing the way people in the company think and act. For example, instead of having paper forms for everything, people get used to doing things online.
Clients these days expect quick and easy service. If they can order a pizza with a few clicks, they'll want the same convenience from other companies. So, digital transformation helps meet these expectations by adding things like online ordering or customer service chatbots.
For Processes: With digital tools, tasks that used to take hours might only take minutes. For example, software can automatically sort through customer complaints and send them to the right department.
For People: Employees can work smarter, not harder. They might use project management software to keep track of tasks, or use digital communication tools to work from home.
If one company is slow and stuck in old ways, and another is quick and uses the latest tech, guess which one will win more customers? Digital transformation helps a company stay competitive by keeping up-to-date with the latest tools and ways of doing business.
So, in simple terms, digital transformation helps a company do its job faster, make its customers happier, and stay ahead (or catch up) in the race with other companies.
