Democracy:
Democracy is a system where citizens have the right to participate in decision-making processes through voting and representation. In the UK, this means people elect their leaders, ensuring that the government reflects the will of the people. It promotes accountability and civic engagement, encouraging individuals to actively contribute to the shaping of their society. In this classroom, this means you have a say in how you are assessed and you have the right to make suggestions in improving the course, whether it be an outdated screenshot or content that needs updating. We're all one team here and the collective can work smarter than just one person.
The Rule of Law:
The rule of law means that everyone, including those in authority, is subject to and accountable under the law. It ensures fairness, justice, and equality by establishing a framework within which laws are enacted and enforced consistently. In a society governed by the rule of law, individuals can trust in a just legal system that protects their rights. In this classroom, you are treated as equals in a fair way when being spoken to, listened to, taught or assessed.
Individual Liberty:
Individual liberty emphasises the freedom and rights of each person within the bounds of the law. It allows individuals to express their thoughts, beliefs, and identities freely, fostering a diverse and inclusive society. While respecting others' rights and maintaining social responsibility, individual liberty is a cornerstone of personal autonomy and self-determination. In this classroom, you are empowered (as in Democracy) to suggest new / innovative ways of delivering the course. As a team in any company, "two heads" are better than one.
Mutual Respect:
Mutual respect involves recognizing and appreciating the inherent worth and dignity of every individual, regardless of differences. It promotes a harmonious and inclusive society where people value and understand each other's perspectives. By cultivating respect, communities can work collaboratively and peacefully towards common goals. In this classroom, a teacher cannot know every new technology, so your input is valued whether on what to teach or how to be assessed. This is the basic starting point for any effective team. Teacher is Learner and Learner is Teacher.
Tolerance for Different Faiths and Beliefs:
Tolerance for different faiths and beliefs encourages understanding and acceptance of diverse religious and cultural perspectives. In the UK, this value emphasises the importance of living harmoniously in a multicultural society, where individuals can practise their beliefs freely while respecting the rights of others to do the same. It contributes to a society built on understanding, cooperation, and shared values. In this classroom, your opinion counts and the more we share about ourselves in a safe place, in my opinion, the stronger the team.Â
