Performing a backup in line with a proper plan is similar to doing a fire drill at school. You have to know what to do and how to do it before the actual emergency happens. Here's a simple backup plan you can execute, assuming you are aiming for a role that involves such tasks.
Files to be Backed Up
Employee records
Sales data for the past 6 months
Website source code
Email databases
Frequency of Backup Schedule
Employee records: Weekly
Sales data: Daily
Website source code: Monthly
Email databases: Daily
Appropriate Backup Location
Employee records: Offsite cloud storage
Sales data: On a local SSD in the office and an offsite cloud storage
Website source code: Offline on an external SSD and offsite cloud storage
Email databases: Offsite cloud storage
Backup Steps
Note: The following steps are hypothetical; in a real-world scenario, these would depend on the actual technology and tools used.
Identify the Data Sources: Make sure you know where all the files you need to backup are located.
Check Disk Space: Before you start, make sure there's enough space in the destination drive or cloud storage.
Execute Backup:
For local backups, you can use backup software that comes with your operating system. Select the files you need and choose the local SSD as the destination.
For cloud backups, log into the cloud service and follow the prompts to upload your files. You can often schedule these to run automatically.
Verify Backup:
For local backups, navigate to the SSD and make sure all files appear as they should.
For cloud backups, log into your cloud account and verify that the uploaded files are accessible.
Apply Encryption: If needed, apply encryption to sensitive data.
Test Restore: Once the backup is done, restore a sample file to make sure everything is working as expected.
Document the Backup: Make a record of what was backed up, when, and where it was stored. This is your 'receipt' for the backup process.
Tips
Always have more than one backup if possible.
Rotate your backups to ensure you have the most current data secured.
Performing a backup may seem like an extra chore, but it's crucial for protecting valuable data, much like keeping a spare key can save you a lot of trouble if you ever lose your primary key. Good luck with your network technician endeavors!
