What do I bring?
Gratitude
What did I take a picture of?
Water and sunrise
What does it represent?
When I found FYS class for first Generation students I thought “Wow YCP take time for a class for first-generation student” I got a great professor, and the assignments are interesting and relate to me in a way on how I see myself as first gen at YCP. But one of the assignments that my professor asked us to do was a VIA character strength assessment to learn more about what we bring and the strength we bring along with it to YCP, and when I took mine, my results were hope, love, spirituality, etc.
But now out of all the ones listed there was one word I didn’t see but that I thought I was and that was the gratitude I feel like I use gratitude on a lot of things because I feel most things should be chaired to a certain existent. I am thankful for something people give to me. Also, things I buy myself I take gratitude because I took time to make money to buy it.
The picture I decided to choose was water and the sunrise because when I was taking it I was on a fishing trip during fall break with my dad and I have never been on a boat for fishing so it was a new experience and I was thankful for this new experience, also just spending time with my dad because it had been a while since I have seen him and spent time with him since I had left for college. So, when I choose the picture, I just see a calm and happy moment for myself.
But that’s not the only thing I take gratitude in, I also am thankful for being a first-generation college student, by being the first Son, Grandchild, and nephew to go to college and this was a big deal for my family because I showed interest in perusing a degree in Early childhood education. My family was proud of me when I got into many colleges, and I choose York I was happy with myself because I choose a college that considers First Generation students, and my parents liked that too. My dad was pleased for me to go and I took gratitude in that because I like seeing my dad happy and it was just another reason for him to be proud of me.
