What Do I Bring?
A Sense of Family
What Did I Take a Picture of?
A dandelion
What Does it Represent?
Dandelions are an interesting plant. Most plants spread seeds, but keep their flowers. A dandelion, though, sacrifices its flower and its beauty in order to spread its seeds. When I was a child, I was on a family vacation and I saw a dandelion for the first time. We lived in a city, so this was an interesting sight for me. I brought it to my mother and handed it to her as if to ask, “What is it?”. My mother said to me, “Oh, that’s a dandelion honey. You need to make a wish and blow all the seeds away so your wish comes true”. My response to this, as a 4 year old girl, was “WISHIE!” and then I proceeded to aggressively blow on it, unsuccessfully. From that moment on, my entire family called a dandelion, a “wishie”. This story is a very important one to me and my identity because it represents the connections that I have with my family members.
So, for this project, I decided to photograph a dandelion to represent that I bring a sense of family to York College. My family is the most important to me and we are very close. Anyone in my family would do anything for me, and I would do the same for them. Just like a dandelion, my family sacrifices their ”flowers” in order to spread seeds of wisdom. Being a first generation student, my family has had to make the sacrifice of me leaving for college in order to improve my education, personality, and life in general. This is my idea of family, the sacrifices you give to protect and support your family members, blood or otherwise. At York College, I uphold the same value that sacrifice is what represents family and I would sacrifice for others around me to protect and support them.
