What do I bring?
Many times since we began this semester, the students in the First Spartans FYS class are asked what they believe they bring to the York College community. I struggled for a long time not knowing what I bring. I had just gotten to a new school in a new state. Everything in my life has changed and it felt like I had too. College was something that I was extremely unfamiliar with. When I got to school I felt like a new person, so when I was asked what I bring to YCP, I couldn’t think of anything. No one knew me here and I didn't know anyone either. I was a blank slate.
As a child, I moved around a lot. Each new state was a new start. For my picture, I chose a crumpled-up ball of paper. To me, this represented a new start. As humans, we make mistakes, and that’s okay, it’s where we learn. We learn how to get through challenges and persevere. If there is one thing that I bring to YCP it is my perseverance. I have struggled and I know I will continue to do so throughout my college career. But I will not let them keep me from carrying on. I will persevere through whatever challenges are thrown my way. I may have to restart a few times to get the right idea. I may have to crumple up a few papers before I get the right one. But just because one way doesn’t work, doesn’t mean you should give up. Try new ideas, use what you’ve learned, and learn how to persevere.
