Writing Call Numbers in Printed Materials
If at all possible, write the call number - using a sharpened pencil, so you can write small! - in the upper right hand corner of the page behind the title page (not the t.p. verso, but the recto of the page behind it). For scores, this will often be the first page of music, but not always. For scores and/or parts which lack title pages, write in the upper right hand corner of the 1st pg. of music.
Make sure to write the call number on each separate physical piece (e.g. parts, supplements, etc.)
Please also note:
· Books and scores consisting of only a single signature, or a single signature plus separate parts, will be pamphlet-bound in-house. (These often arrive from the publisher with a staple down the middle of the spine) If possible, leave ca. 1/8 inch blank space above and to the right of the call number when writing it in, but don't worry if you can't. These items normally won't be trimmed in binding, so the extra space isn't essential.
· "Fatter" books and scores, which consist of more than one signature (or which have a flat spine) will be sent out to Heckman for binding and are likely to be trimmed on all sides. When writing in the call number, you MUST leave 1/4 inch on all sides (including top!) or part of the number may get cut off. If you can't fit the call number in the usual spot for these items, write it on the title page instead, in as close to the upper right hand corner as possible.
