Classification Numbers
1. Most music-related serials will be classed under one of the following numbers:
U.S. publication: ML1
Non-U.S. publications: ML5 (pre-1800: ML4
More specific types of serials may be classed under the category (genre) of the serials (e.g. directories, etc.). Some possibilities:
Directories: ML12-21
Societies and Organizations: ML25-28
Consult the LC Class M schedule for more specific information on numbers in these ranges.
2. If OCLC copy for a serial uses a more specific class number (other than ML1-28):
· Check the number in the M schedule to make sure it is accurate for the subject matter of the journal
· Search the class number in Alma to see how we have used the class number before for serials. If we have, go ahead and use it.
Cutters
Generally assign one Cutter for a serial, based on the title of the Serial.
Generally don't assign a second Cutter for serials, unless we have already established a pattern for doing so (as we have done in the ML5 serials that start with the word "Music"!)
