When we remember someone, there are moments when we feel their presence strongly. They exist clearly within our memories, yet they are no longer there in reality. We may not even remember exactly when or where we last spoke. And yet, perhaps it is the time spent alongside that ambiguous presence that keeps us going. “There,” and yet “not there.” The boundary between the two shifts gently, never quite coming into focus.
Wood engraving is a printmaking technique in which fine lines are engraved with a burin into hard woods such as boxwood and camellia. Historically, it was used to reproduce illustrations for natural-history books, epic poetry, and other publications in highly detailed form. I seek to capture human figures and traces of human presence as they emerge from the accumulation of these finely engraved lines. I am drawn to the luminous lines carved into dark surfaces, as well as to the sense of wind and the passage of time that can emerge through the layering and accumulation of lines. These qualities are among the things I find most compelling about wood engraving. I hope that from the intricate accumulation of lines and dots, new stories will arise within each viewer.
