One day, as I was reading the illustrated script for "Kumano Kanshin Jikkai Mandala," my then three-year-old son seemed to think it was a picture book and begged me to read it to him. As I held him on my lap and showed him a section of the Kumano Kanshin Jikkai Mandala, I thought, "For children, anything with pictures and words is a picture book." And seeing my son surprisingly enjoying the picture of hell, I realized that I was the one who had arbitrarily drawn a line between "this is a children's picture book, and this is something adults read." "Kumano Kanjin Jikkai Mandala" depicts the world of those who have attained enlightenment and the world of those who are lost, but there is no clear boundary between these worlds. The visible world and the invisible world, heaven and hell are all interconnected. I realized while creating this work that whether or not to draw a line is up to the individual.
This artwork was created using the etching technique of copperplate engraving. A ground (corrosion inhibitor) was applied to the copper plate, dots and lines were drawn with a needle, and then it was etched. A test print was made, the ground was applied again, the drawing, etching, and test print were repeated. For this piece, a type of Japanese paper called gampi paper was used, and the color of the paper gives it a unique texture. The hand-colored parts were colored using gold mud paint and crystal powder dissolved in animal glue.
