People, cars, buildings, and trees— When various boundaries blur and melt away, Yet the mountain ridges stand out in sharp relief. A time when borders intermingle, A time when contours become distinct, Embracing both within— The twilight hour.
This is a water-based woodblock print created using three blocks and five colors on traditional Echizen washi paper. The most crucial element of this piece is how the wood grain appears. Right from the stage of selecting the woodblocks, I specifically chose a grain that would bring a subtle nuance into the sky, integrating it directly into the expression. Printing the wood grain requires incredibly delicate moisture control. The optimal time for dampening the paper changes depending on whether it is rainy, sunny, or if the heating or cooling is on. Even after 18 years of practice, it is still a process of trial and error.
Although this is a limited edition, no two prints turn out exactly the same. In this era of advanced AI and digital printing technology, I believe this is precisely what makes hand-crafted woodblock printing so fascinating.
Twilight is my absolute favorite time of day. I truly hope you enjoy this art work.
