A long-time Salemtowne resident is no longer with us. Goliath the snapping turtle had made Babcock Lake home for an unknown number of years; snapping turtles can live around 30 years in the wild and the lake has existed much longer than that. Goliath knew when residents would come to the fishing pier to throw treats in the water and would surface in front of the pier around those times. In the fall of 2024, trail walkers noticed Goliath had not been seen in a while and then, as the leaves began to fall off the bushes, someone noticed his body on a lakeside hill. From the condition of his shell, he had a long, tough life. He will be missed
