Moutain Vistas

Salemtowne is in the foothills of the Sauratown Mountain range

During times when there are no leaves on the trees, when walking north on the Moravian Way sidewalk, as your round the crest of the hill and start down the other side, you can catch glimpses of some of the Sauratown Mountain range (sometimes called "the mountains away from the mountains") on the horizon.

Some mountains to look for on the horizon

      • Pilot Mountain. To the left is Pilot Mountain (Jomeokee), 2,421 feet elevation, home to Pilot Mountain State Park. There is a trail around the peak but no access to the top. From Salemtowne, a view of Pilot Mountain is blocked by a 900 feet peak with trees on top located only a few miles northwest of Salemtowne.\

      • Sauratown Mountain. In the center is Sauratown Mountain, 2,441 feet elevation. The peak is home to many communication towers. The peak used to be accessible to the public. You could tour the communications control rooms and climb an unused fire tower. Now, the mountain is privately owned not accessible to the public.

      • To the right is a group of mountain peaks:

        • Moore's Knob, 2,579 feet elevation, a part of Hanging Rock State Park, is the highest point in the Sauratown Mountains. A trail leads to an old fire tower on top of the knob.

        • Hanging Rock Mountain, 2,160 feet elevation, a part of Hanging Rock State Park. The Hanging Rock Trail ends at the top of the Hanging Rock, which is below the true summit.

        • Devils Chimney, 2,396 feet elevation, a part of Hanging Rock State Park. The Cook's Wall Trail ends near the summit.

        • Cooks Wall Mountain, 2,346 feet elevation, a part of Hanging Rock State Park.
