Try walking on the trails where the uneven, changing surfaces challenge your balance and help build the muscles you need for good balance.
Cold and warm. On cold, windy days, walking on the trails helps reduce the effects of wind chill. On warm days, a pleasant walk in the woods helps to prevent the winter blues.

The 2024 National Trails Day Mindfulness Walk, set up by Laura Gorycki, our Salmetowne Wellness Experience Director, was a huge success. There has been a lot of rain in the last few days but the trails are open and in good condition. According to the CDC, adults aged 65 and older need at least 150 minutes a week (for example, 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week) of moderate-intensity activity such as BRISK walking. Or they need 75 minutes a week of vigorous-intensity activity such as trail hiking, jogging, or running. They also need activities that strengthen muscles and improve balance at least twice a week. A research study by the Nation Institutes for Health found that older women who took 4,400 steps a day had a lower risk of dying than those taking 2,700 steps a day. The benefit leveled off at about 7,500 steps a day.

A good viewing spot is along the sidewalk along Babcock Drive. Another spot that gives you a good view of the sunrise over Salem Village is the Pleasure Garden on Moravian Way. Even better is to cross the street at the Pleasure Garden, cross the grass field, climb to the top of the grass hill, and look back east over Salem Village. This spot is just a few yards from the highest spot in Salemtowne.

Tony has completed the Lake Trail that leads from the Buckalew Trail to the bench at the Turtle Watch Rest Stop and then leads up the hill to the Muir Trail and then leads back to the Buckalew Trail. The trail is now smooth and easy to traverse.
The Buckalew Trail as it leads up the hill from the dam to the meadow is now easier to traverse. The trail now has a ditch on one side with cutouts to drain runoff water coming down the hill into the woods.

On the Muir Trail leading west up the hill from the Dam Bridge, just after you cross the small Deacon Way Bridge there is an area to the right where the trail is being rerouted. Don't enter this section until Tony has worked on it. A nest of baby yellow-jacket bees in the area. Tom Mann and I were stung while working there. I sprayed the area with bee killer but I don't know where the nest is located.

Work is being done on the Buckalew Trail as it leads up the hill from the lake to the meadow. Tony is leveling the trail, removing rock and roots, and creating drainage ditches and cutouts.

The Lake Trail that leads to the Turtle Watch Bench is now smoother, straighter, and more accessible and the area around the bench is more open for viewing. This area offers a wide view of the lake and it's always in shade during the summer.

You can see the work that has been done and the machine being used to carve out the trail by walking north on the Hillside Pond Loop Trail at the Community Gardens Access Point and then turning left/west onto the Muir Trail. This is only the first cut of the trail; the tail will get more work done to it in the next few months.
