Welcome to the Western Civilization page...here you will find all homework assignments and other documents needed for class.

Primary Research for Medieval Europe:  Please being researching the following for your notebook...all of these things are due Wednesday December 14, 2022.  I will want to see your research before we go on Christmas Break.

I.  Please create a list of the major Gods for Ancient Rome, Pagan Gods of the Celts and Viking Gods with a short description of each of the MAJOR Gods.  (you should have a list of 8-10 Gods for each religion.

II.  Please begin collecting pictures of Medieval Castles from all over Europe. (From 1000-1500 AD) You can also include pictures of castles from the Middle East.  

III.  Please collect pictures of Cathedrals build in Europe between 1100 and 1500 AD.  You should have exterior and interior pictures -  please include the names of the Cathedrals and the year it was completed.

For all of you who did not have the homework assignment for class today, you have to turn this assignment in by 6pm on Friday December 16, 2022.  Thank you to those who did their homework on time.


Reading:  Regional Civilizations

Please read this chapter and answer the chapter review questions at the end of the chapter.  Please also answer the questions to the supplemental reading on page 242, A crusader's Letter, and on page 244, Unlucky King John and the Magna Carta.  Pleaser make sure you label the different section of the assignment and complete all questions.  Please make sure your name is on your homework document and not just at the top of the google doc.  Please see Erin for help and complete this assignment for class on Wednesday January 25, 2023.


For Monday January 23, 2023:  Please write up a list of features you want to include in your castle drawing...remember you have to prepare to fend off my 6 month siege.  We will be talking about these lists before we start drawing the Castle.  Also, you may want to finish watching the documentary Castle with David MacCauley on Youtube to get more information for your list.  Email me if you have any questions.  


Castle Project:  You must design and draw the plans for the castle...the plans should show each of the features of the castle and be in color.  This castle is based on the Castle documentary we watched in class (it is on Youtube) and notes that you took about our discussions about castles.  It has to withstand a 6 month siege by Her Majesty's forces. This project is Due Wednesday February 8, 2023.


Reading 2:  Chapter 11, The Byzantine Empire, Russia and Eastern Europe....please read the chapter and complete the chapter review on pages 268 and 269.  Please also read the supplemental readings and complete the questions for each reading.  The readings are on pages 265 and 266.  Please answer long answer questions on a separate piece of paper and make sure you put your name on every page you hand in to me.  This is due Monday February 13, 2023.

Please collect pictures and drawings of Castles over the break...this is research for the Castle project and your research has to be attached to you final presentation in class.  I will assign the project when we return and after we have studied Castles a little more...we will also look at Castle by David McCauley to see how Castles were built.  If there is time we will check in on a modern Castle building project going on in France.


Saints and Stained Glass Windows - Due  Friday January 15, 2021

Please write 2-3 paragraphs telling me about who your saint is and why they were made a saint.  You want enough information so you can design a stained glass window that represents that saint.  Your drawing must depict your saint in such a way that people would be able to recognize who the person in the stained glass window is on sight.  Please email me with any questions.

Final Project:  Design a Knights Heraldry  - Due Wednesday February 24, 2021

You will design the coat of arms for your knight using the pictures from the design packet linked below.

The final project must have a separate drawing of your heraldic shield and you must add your 

heraldic design to the knight provided in the packet...it has to be drawn on his shield, surcoat and cape.
