There will be an in-class essay on Tuesday November 14, 2023 on The Ill-Made Knight and Richard III.
There are a number of documentaries on Richard III and the fate of the two Princes on Youtube. The one I referenced in class is called Richard III The New Evidence. There are also a number of news reports and short films on the discovery of the body of Richard III and how they proved that the body they found was actually Richard III. There is also come coverage of the re-burial of Richard III.

Use parenthetical notation to list the page of the quote. I am interested in your opinions in the essay, so feel free to use “I” statements.
The main lead character in both The Ill-Made Knight and Richard III have definite points of view about themselves and the world around them. Please discuss in your essay how each of these men feel about themselves and how these feelings have helped or hindered them in their lives. Which path in life did they choose and how was this choice affected by their own feelings? Which character is successful in following the path they have chosen? Is there any punishment for their choices? Do they, in the end, fulfill their destiny?

Marley introduces in the reading and to the reader his mission, which is Scrooge's "reclamation." In your essay discuss how Dickens uses Scrooge's past, present and future, as well as the wider Victorian world to help Scrooge get his "reclamation." What are the lessons Dickens uses to teach us about how you should live your life both at Christmas time but all year round? Why does he choose Christmas as the time for all of this to take place both for Scrooge and us the readers?

Designing Mill/Urban Housing Project
This is a multi-part project...first you have to write up a list of problems that need to be resolved where there is a large working class population and its effect on the city that they have moved into for their jobs. You should start by writing the list of the problems...it should have a least five items on it and include ideas on how you can fix these problems with your housing design. Remember what we talked about in class when writing up your list and be sure to brainstorm ideas that can resolve the problems. This is due Thursday January 11, 2024.
Designing Mill/Urban Housing Project- Part II
Using your list of problems I want you to start to sketch out the Housing project. Please on providing housing for 100 workers and a home for the Overseer and his family.n You may want to explore Victorian Mill housing in England and the housing available for working people in the 19th century. There are websites and pictures to look at for information, just make sure you are looking at England and not "New England." You have to produce two drawings, one of the front of the housing and the second a floor plan of the interior house labeling each room and space in the house. There are pads of paper behind my desk and boxes of crayons and pencils in my room on the window sill or in the closet. These drawings will be due Thursday January 18, 2024.

Choose three characters to analyze in Alice in Wonderland. As this is a story written for children, who might these characters be based on in real life? What lessons, if any, do these characters teach the reader? What did you think of how Alice resolved the problems and events that she encountered in Wonderland? What might that teach young readers?
For Thursday January 25, 2024, please read the prologue and through chapter 8 of the Moonstone.
The Story of India class assignment: After you watch episode 6 of the Story of India...Please write a one page reaction to the documentary...what did you think of the actions of the British in India? How do you think India would be viewed back home in England? This is due Tuesday January 30, 2024.

During the Victorian Era, social class was a very important element in society, with this in mind, discuss the role of social class in the relationships between the characters in the book The Moonstone. Also, consider the importance of these social classes in society in general. You might consider the relationship between Betteredge and Mrs Verinder, or between the members of the household staff and Rosanna, or Sergeant Cuff, Mr. Bruff, Miss Clack, Mr. Luker and Ezra Jennings as other characters who interact with The Verinders.
Mr. Betteredge loves the book Robinson Crusoe, which is a story about a man who is living on a deserted desert island. Why do you think he loves this book so much? How does this book affect Mr Betteredge in performing his duties in the Household? What does this attraction to the book tell us about Gabriel Betteredge?
Trimester Three: Modern Times
Please read pages 1-11 of the First World War book and using the timeline in the back of the book, write out an annotated timeline of the events you think were important in the lead up to the outbreak of the First World War. This is due Thursday March 28, 2024
Please start reading the second part of the Introduction in the First World War book, pages 11 - 29. Be prepared to discuss the events discussed in this part of the reading and make sure that you look at all of the entries that are mentioned in the text that are also in the book. Pages are given for those entries. Please have this completed by Thursday April 4, 2024.
For Thursday April 4th's class: Please read the World War I Poets book. Choose three poems that you like and write a paragraph for each one explaining what it is about and why you liked the poem. Please have this for class on Thursday when I will collect your work.
Due Thursday April 11, 2024: Essay on Siegfried Sassoon's Declaration
Linked below is a statement made by Siegfried Sassoon to Parliament regarding the state of the war. Please read the statement, and with your notes, the poems and the Documentaries, discuss the life of the WWI British soldier...what was their lives like...what hardships did they face, how do you think they would respond to Sassoon's declaration, and what do you think of it? Empire of the Sun: Please start reading Empire of the Sun and fill in the Note/Work sheet as you read. There are three sections to the book: Section One is 120 pages long, Section Two is 84 pages long and Section Three is 63 pages long...so Section One and Section Two will be due Tuesday April 23, 2024, which will give you the vacation to get the bigger part of the book done.
