Trimester One

Due Wednesday September 6, 2023:  Assignment I:   Please make a collage of pictures of how you define "Fashion."  Include in your collage, if you can, pictures of modern fashion that reflect different time periods of fashion. (Please note that this can be a digital collage or power point as we can project it on the white board....we will also talk about digital presentations in class.)

Reading II: The Late Middle Ages

Project I:  You have a choice from three projects outlined below.  You must make your choice of project by Monday September 25, 2023.   There will be check-ins on this project in every class up to the due date to answer questions and monitor progress. You must be able to share an update in every class.  The final project is Due Wednesday October 4, 2023.

 Stained Class Windows project:  Please choose a Saint and write one page explaining who your Saint is and why you chose them.  Please draw two stained class windows; one of a Saint you chose to venerate in your window.  It should show the Saint either performing an act that lead to their canonization, or their Epiphany, or just shows them as a Saint surrounded by symbols of their life; and please draw a Rose Window for the eastern end of the cathedral.

Fashion Line:  Please design a line of modern clothes that include obvious homages to medieval clothing.  You must draw three separate outfits and a set of underclothes for this fashion design project.  You must produce a separate drawing for each of the four designs. Please also include a written statement detailing your design ideas that explains your line of clothes.

Castle Design:  Please design a castle that can withstand a long, serious siege of many months! You need to draw a bird's eye view of the Castle and label the various parts of the Castle in your design...it must include a great hall, a well, stables and show where the private apartments for the lord and his family are located.  Please note where your castle is located.  The floor plan of the Castle must be in full color.

Reading III: The Italian Renaissance

Due October 16, 2023...please put together a power point presentation with pictures of English manor houses, Italian Palazzos and French Chateaux.   You should identify the name of the property and where it is located.  Pick 3 that you like and include pictures of the interior of the property...especially the great hall of each property.

Final Project: Renaissance House Project due November 10, 2023

For your final project you are to design either a English Manor House, a French Chateau, or an Italian Palazzo.  You have to draw a floor plan for your choice and a section drawing of one side of the building.  You also have to design the Great Hall and draw a floor plan of the hall and include drawings of the hall decoration around the floor plan.  You must also draw renderings of 2 rooms: One of the bedchamber and one of a private living room.  These renderings can be digital and must include a floor plan and pictures of the furniture and furnishings.  We will have weekly check-ins on Wednesday to check on progress and answer questions.  Please see Erin if you have any questions or problems and need help!!!!!!

Due Monday October 23, 2023:  You must submit your choice of house that you will be designing .

Due Wednesday December 6, 2023:  Please start research for the Colony Project by researching the answer to the following questions:  Who starts the colony  and why did they start it?  Who were the first people from Europe to start the colony?  What native americans were in the area where you are starting your colony?  What was their experience as your colony gets built?

Colony Design Project - map #1 due Wednesday January 10, 2024

Remember the colony drawing should be in color and have a key to things on the map.  If you have any questions, or any problems, please email Erin...start this over the break so it is not rushed after break.


Due Friday January 12:  Fabric Design Swatch

Please design a swatch of fabric (8.5 x 11) with either an Indian or Chinese pattern to be used for a day robe or dressing gown of the early 19th century.  It should show the major design pattern that is replicated for the whole cloth.  


The Second Colonial Map: Due Friday January 19, 2024

The second map should reflect 50 years of growth for your colony.  This should include more people and houses, a meeting house and other businesses.  You should also indicate where there is growth outside of the immediate town.

The Third Map: Due Friday February 2, 2024

The third map should reflect changes in your town that have occurred around the time of the Revolution.  It is now part of the United States.  It has grown in size and might now include more roads, maybe a dock for bringing in supplies and sending out commodities.  It could reflect damage done in the war.  And,  it should include more people and houses, schools (maybe a college?) and more businesses.  You might even have part of the town where the wealthier people live.  You should also indicate where there continues to be growth outside of the immediate town.  Please make sure to show where the changes have happened by outlining it in red.

Final Project Proposal:  Think about a film or tv show that shows fashion from the 19th century.  Please write a proposal that identifies the name of the movie, the director and the costume designer, a statement of what the movie is about and the time period.  The final project should present a discussion of the accuracy of the costume design, a discussion of the vision of the director and costume designer and an evaluation of how well the costumes live up to accuracy and that vision.  Please write a proposal that tells me the name of the movie, director and costume designer...its time period and what you hope to discuss in your final project.  See me for assistance as needed.  This is due Friday February 2, 2024.

The Fourth Map: Due Wednesday February 21, 2024

The fourth map should reflect changes in your town that have occurred around the time of 1840-50Your town has continued to grow and has to include more roads linking the states and other cities, a railroad terminal and tracks and more infrastructure for the developing the city, supplies and sending out commodities.  As we discussed in class, your city should have a designated "Main Street/downtown commercial area.  Your city should also include more people and houses, schools, churches and more businesses. You should also indicate where there continues to be growth outside of the immediate town.  Please make sure to show where the changes have happened by outlining it in red.


Film Projects Update:  All Film projects will be due Wednesday, February 28, 2024

Moving forward, you must update your film project worksheet with more information and questions by Friday of the week (2/16, 2/23).  I will be checking them on Friday and will make comments on your sheet, so make sure I have access to your sheet.  I will also give you time in Friday's class to work on projects (map and film).  


The Final Map: Due Monday March 4 2024 - note this is the last class so it has to be done!

The final map should reflect changes in your town that have occurred around the time of the turn of the century.  Your town has continued to grow and has to include more roads linking the states and other cities, and more infrastructure for the developing the city.  This may now include such things as suburban areas, a mass transit system and taller more impressive building in the downtown area.  You might also want to consider adding a recreational area for your town...a park, theaters or a sports complex.  You should also consider how you are going to provide sewerage and garbage removal   Your city should also include more people and houses, schools, churches and more businesses. You should also indicate where there continues to be growth outside of the immediate town.  Please make sure to show where the changes have happened by outlining it in red.

Fashion Design Project I

Please design a modern line of clothes that feature elements of fashion from 1900-1920. I would like two Haute Couture designs and two Ready to Wear designs with Accessories (hats, shoes, etc.)  I would like the design to be drawn and in color (no digital drawings this time).  This is due Friday April 12, 2024.  Please see or email Erin if you have any questions about this design project.

Project #2:  Building the Suburban Dream

You will design a suburban neighborhood to share with the class.  It should include the cookie cutter houses we discussed in class.  It also has to include stores and other amenities for suburban life, schools and play fields for the kids, and of course a church.  Other things to consider are a public pool, golf course, and playgrounds.  It should all be drawn on one sheet, in color and with a key so we can understand what is on the plan you have drawn.  This is due Wednesday May 8, 2024If you have any questions or concerns, please see Erin asap!  You will present your designs in class.

Final Project

You have a choice to design a line of clothes

incorporating renaissance fashion into a Modern Line of clothes...it must include a wedding dress. You would have to design 6 pieces including the wedding dress.

Your second choice is to design the exterior of a Renaissance palazzo as well as one room inside

the Palazzo...this means three drawings (front back and side elevation) and a detailed drawing of the interior room including furnishings and furniture. See Erin for help or questions.
