Summer and other program Options

As of early February, many sites have published their dates and programs for 2024, and I am working through them to update this list, but if something looks interesting that doesn't have an asterisk showing it's running this year, click on it.  There's a good chance you'll find updated information.

Summer Programs 2024 (click on the link)  last updated April 10, 2024  with more to do

(I'm indicating what's planning to run this year with asterisks from last year's list as they let me know, but you can look at the whole list and click on the links to see what they're currently thinking about this year (as if they really know).  I am changing the 2024 list as I get notifications.   I will update as we get that information and will check the whole list at some point in late January or early February.  In the mean time, I'd say at least 90% of those that ran last year will run this year in roughly the same time frame.  There are sure to be a few additions to the list as well.  The summer options list is generally updated in late January into February and then regularly into the spring as new opportunities arise. If you are looking between May and January, you will see the previous year's list, which is likely pretty accurate for the next summer except for the dates.

Here are the suggestions for the summer between sophomore and junior year that we discussed at the sophomore meeting in May:

Sophomore Summer Suggestions 23

An online school we recommend for either summer or credit at other times is the Keystone School.  However, students may never earn credit for taking more than 7 classes at a time (including ours in school) as results tend to be disastrous when they try.  Thus, summer is the best time for catch up classes, and they must be pre-approved by Cary to count for School One credit.  Classes that are "Credit Recovery" only count as one trimester with us regardless of what they claim.  https://www.keystoneschoolonline.com/

The Roger Williams Park Zoo will host their annual Career & Volunteer Fair on Wednesday, February 15th from 10am-6pm in the Carousel Village in the Park. There are multiple part-time & seasonal opportunities for students this year. There are also openings to join our special event volunteer team (16+) for community service requirements. Come and meet our department representatives!

If you are an underclass student looking to save money on an arts class outside of School One, consider applying to the Patricia W. Edwards Memorial Art Scholarship Fund.  The scholarships are for further education of young Rhode Island artists. The scholarship is available for Rhode Island high school freshman, sophomore and juniors, who wish to attend one art class at a Rhode Island institution (Rhode Island School of Design, AS220, etc.) The applicant must demonstrate artistic ability and interest in painting and/or drawing.  For more information, contact Kelly Riley, Donor Services Administrator, at 401-427-4028 or kriley@rifoundation.org. For 2022, the deadline is May 23 at 5 p.m.   Here is the URL to get to the application site: https://www.grantrequest.com/Login.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2fapplication.aspx%3fSA%3dSNA%26FID%3d35045%26sid%3d5741&SA=SNA&FID=35045&sid=5741

A free programming camp, no experience required:

Kode With Klossy is partnering with Infosys and offering a special opportunity to high school students in Rhode Island.

Kode With Klossy is a nonprofit that provides free 2-week coding camps to young women, nonbinary, and trans youth, aged 13-18. They create safe, inclusive spaces for their students to learn a new superpower - coding. Over the course of two weeks, participants will learn coding languages, become part of a close-knit community, and gain valuable leadership, presentation, and innovation experience. They will gain access to a best-in-class curriculum and receive mentorship and support from Kode With Klossy alumni and instructors.

I’m reaching out to you in the hopes that you can help me to share this opportunity with young women and non-binary students between the ages of 13 and 18 that would benefit from this program in your community. The program is completely free and no computer science experience is required. More information and the application can be found at kodewithklossy.com/apply!

The application deadline is September 30th for the fall semester. Whether students enjoy computer science or not, they will gain an invaluable experience that combines technology education with social good– no prior programming experience needed.

I’ve included a program blurb below that I would appreciate if you could share with families, students, or teachers who may benefit (grades 5-12). Thank you so much!
