Scholarships

Be aware that scholarships sent directly to the college are often deducted from your financial aid award and thus help the college but not you.  Some colleges don't do this, but some do.  Here's an article about this invidious practice: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1-tMwBbDRdsYZF32DhVyFwJG09PSqhy5RlpB2NgZZRuU/edit#heading=h.gjdgxs

The Carter Roger Williams Scholarship, for high school seniors.

The scholarship provides four-year scholarships of up to $20,000 per student per year for graduating high school seniors in Rhode Island. The scholarship is part of our Carter Roger Williams Initiative, conceived of and funded by philanthropists Letitia and the late John Carter and managed by the Rhode Island Foundation.

Rhode Island founder Roger Williams was a remarkable man. He came from a very modest background, and access to education was key in shaping his character, beliefs, and actions throughout his life. Roger Williams set the standard for separation of church and state that the nation adopted, and his vision and determination built the “lively experiment” that was and is Rhode Island. We believe that many of his values are more relevant than ever.

The Carter Roger Williams Scholarship provides annual scholarships to Rhode Island high school seniors who display an appreciation for, and a desire to embody, the values of our state’s founder. The program also provides comprehensive resources and information about Roger Williams and his teachings via Roger Williams National Memorial.

The deadline to apply for the Carter Roger Williams Scholarship is midnight on Monday, March 11, 2024. Applicants must currently be residents of Rhode Island and seniors at any high school in Rhode Island, and they must have been accepted by an accredited post-secondary institution by the date of award. Applications should be submitted via our online electronic scholarship application system. To apply, please visit Browse Scholarships

Profile in courage scholarships : Scholarship Value: $10,000, Awards Available: 17

Describe and analyze an act of political courage by a U.S. elected official who served during or after 1917, the year John F. Kennedy was born. Include an analysis of the obstacles, risks, and consequences associated with the act. The essay may concern an issue at the local, state, national, or international level. Since originality is one of the criteria for judging, we strongly encourage students to profile an official in their town, state or region, or a leader who has addressed an issue of great concern to them. We advise students to avoid selecting a common essay subject.

Eligibility: The contest is open to United States high school students in grades nine through twelve attending public, private, parochial, or home schools; U.S. students under the age of twenty enrolled in a high school correspondence/GED program in any of the fifty states, the District of Columbia, or the U.S. territories; and U.S. citizens attending schools overseas. The DEADLINE for students to apply for the Transform RI Scholarship is fast approaching - MARCH 31, 2024.  We will have a visit to discuss this scholarship on March 22, 2024 during advising.

The 2024 Transform RI Scholarship (TRIS) is a unique opportunity for RI’s high school students to use their voice and share their ideas to create real change. The Papitto Opportunity Connection will invest $1 million to make the winning idea become a reality and TEN TRIS finalists will be awarded scholarships worth between $5,000-$25,000.  As an added incentive, the school with the most TRIS entries will split a $5,000 prize, half to be designated for students to use towards Prom and $2,500 will be awarded to the faculty.  RI high school students must simply answer the question:  If you had a million dollars to improve the lives of those who need it most in Rhode Island, how would you do it?

TRIS is open to ALL high school students in RI. Students can submit an essay, video, or multimedia presentation. We’re looking for unique and innovative ideas that would create real change in our communities of need. (We are NOT looking for how students would use the million to invest in existing organizations).

Again, the deadline to enter is March 31, 2024. Here is direct link to the TRIS: https://pocfoundation.com/transformri/
