Tasman Nelson

Tasman Domain Shared Path Loop

Tasman District Council shared walkway (actually unformed roads) for walkers, cyclists and horse riders. Has gates but they are user friendly, follow the signs and leave gates as you find them. Great views of Tasman Bay and Arthur Range. Please be courteous to other users, they have the same right to be on this trail as you do.

Start at the domain is just north of the Tasman Store on Aporo Road.

Ride back down Rush Lane (the entrance to the Domain) to Dicker Road, and ride Dicker Rd to the end then look for the starting sign post. Then it follows the ridge between paddocks, and the new highway (on your right). Look for the marker at the top of the hill at the junction with Stagecoach Rd (sometimes called old coach rd) telling you to go left down the hill onto Williams Road. Follow Williams Road out to Aporo Road, turn left (mind the traffic but the verge on the side of the road is quite good), go past Tasman Store, Tasman School and then you'll arrive back at Dicker Road starting point.

Parking:

Float parking inside Tasman Domain, toilets, hitching rails. Close the gate to the Domain behind you.

Stagecoach Rd to Mapua

The same as above but continue on Stagecoach Rd all the way to Mapua, and Seaton Valley Rd instead of turning onto Williams Rd. This is all unformed road that runs roughly beside SH60.

Waimea River Park

Waimea River Park covers approximately 394 hectares of land alongside the Waimea River from Bryant Road and the park continues downstream on both sides of the Waimea River to the Waimea Estuary.

Access points:

  • Clover Rd/Pugh Rd - park alongside the road, there are some wide berms midway down (do not go all the way down Clover Rd as you'll get stuck not able to turn) and ride down to the river side trail.

  • Lower Queen St - good parking

Porika 4WD Track - Lake Rotoroa, Nelson Lakes National Park*

Time: 3 hr return

*The track, while on the edge of the National Park, is outside its boundary.

The Porika 4WD Track heads up onto the northern end of the Muntz Range, which runs along the eastern side of Lake Rotoroa. From here, a spectacular view can be gained of the lake and the surrounding bush-clad, bare-topped mountain ranges. The track begins at the parking area and campground on the road that branches left after passing the Rotoroa Lodge.

Soon after leaving the parking area, the track zigzags steeply through the beech forest to the lookout points, following the 4WD track that is used to service the power transmission lines. The lookout points are not signposted.

  • Be aware that 4WD vehicles and mountain bikes may also be on this track.

  • The track itself consists mainly of lime rock (see photo below)

Getting there

Lake Rotoroa Village is 40 minutes from St Arnaud off SH6.

Approx 2.5 hrs from Nelson (central) via SH6, Gowan bridge, Porika Rd

Parking

Parking area is near the Lake Rotoroa campsite. Approx 17km from St Arnaud garage.

Plenty of parking and easy access however is a really really steep climb.

Glorious Views!
