The ultimate beach ride, but remember this is a public road so expect all sorts including buses passing you along the beach.
Road access is generally at Ahipara, and you will have to take your chances parking along a street nearby unless you arrange with your accommodation.
Approx 10-15 mins from Dargaville
Baylys beach is a large west coast beach, shared with vehicles, walkers, fishers, sand yachting, trail biking, quad biking, hang gliding, jet skis, surfing etc. Baylys Beach is the gateway to Ripiro Beach, New Zealand’s longest driveable beach. This 100km long beach is backed by high, golden sand dunes and is the site of many shipwrecks,
Main access is via Seaview Rd, and parking is on the beach itself (like Karioitahi and some other west coast beaches)
The Pouto Peninsula is located at the entrance of the Kaipara Harbour, south of Dargaville on the west coast of Northland.
Visit Pouto Peninsular information Pouto Point is a vehicle access beach, close to Dargaville.
Please do not ride through areas of driftwood above the high tide mark, as there may be rare birds such as dotterel nesting there.

Waitangi forest has two parts - the PF Olsen commercial forest, and the Waitangi Endowment Forest, managed by DOC. The forest continually gets mentioned as allowing horse riding. DOC have confirmed that there is NO horse riding allowed as at 2021.
There is no public horse riding in Waitangi forest. There is a horse trekking concessionaire (a company that pays for restricted access), but no public access for horse riders.
