Kapiti Beaches

Horse riding is allowed on any of the Kapiti Beaches, but restrictions apply to areas near town centres and popular bathing or boat launching areas in Summer.

Horse riding summer restrictions - 01 December to the end of Daylight Savings

Do not ride (or lead a horse) in the following areas between 11am –5pm from 01 December to the end of Daylight Savings

  • from the southern boundary of the District to the Wainui Stream mouth at the north of the Paekakariki Settlement

  • Paraparaumu Beach, from the Official Beach Access at Jeep Road, Raumati South, to the Kapiti Boating Club,

  • Waikanae Beach from the Waikanae Boating Club, Waikanae Beach to the Waimeha Stream mouth

  • Otaki Beach, from the beach access point opposite100 Marine Parade to the beach access point opposite 8 Marine Parade.

Pekapeka Beach - Te Horo Beach

  • The beach can be accessed from Peka Peka Road, Te Hapua Road and Sims Road.

  • Toilets and water are available at Ōtaki and Waikanae.

  • Horse float parking and mounting blocks are available at Peka Peka Road, Te Hapua Road and Sims Road in Peka Peka.


  • Keep an eye out for vehicles

  • Horses are permitted on all Kāpiti beaches with restrictions during summer.

  • Dogs must be on a leash at all times.

  • The Ōtaki River cannot be crossed by horseback.

Otaki Beach

6.7km

Starts from the Ōtaki River mouth at the southern end of Marine Parade and heads north along the beach to the Ohau river. Be prepared for two short river crossings along the journey, easily crossed on horseback at low tide. Check the tides before you set off.

Good parking along Marine Parade at the southern end of the beach - ride along berms to an official access point.

Waikanae Beach

Ride from the Waikanae Boating Club, Waikanae Beach north to the Domain or on to Pekapeka beach.

Parking is at Jeep Rd, Raumati (park in the parking area - do not go down the ramp as turning will be difficult)
