Just north of Manakau on SH1, turn off onto Waikawa Beach Road, and turn left onto Manga Pirau St. Beach access is at the end of Manga Pirau St, so park somewhere on the side of the road and ride down. Closest parking is on the berm just past James St. Please don't block access, and clean up after your horses.
Ride below the high tide mark, along the sandy beach once you get across the river mouth. Stick to the waters edge, DO NOT ride on the estuary or in the dunes on the spit as this is a significant area for nesting birds.
Horses allowed on the beach but please keep off the dunes. This beach provides excellent riding, relatively free from logs. To get there turn off the SH at Waitarere, on Waitarere Beach Road.
Access Points
Waitarere Beach Road - continue to the end where you are able to drive onto the beach and park there.
Windsor St - turn left off Waitarere Beach Rd onto Rua St then park near Windsor St where you can also access the beach. If you turn left up Windsor St (away from the beach) there are quite wide berms you could park on, and then it's a short ride down the street to the beach.
Hyderabad Dr - Another off Rua St. When you get to the last intersection turn left (away from the beach) and park on the side of Hyderabad Dr so you can drive off easily when done. Ride down the very short section of road to access the beach.
If you ride south toward Hokio you will find informal access points into Waitarere Forest. Please respect the dune area, and recognise that Waitarere Forest is a commercial forest.
Commercial pine forest at Waitarere. ***INFORMATION IS BEING CONFIRMED WITH Forest Management Limited *** Information from Council is this is a restricted riding area - fenced and gates are locked .
Hokio Beach, near Levin. Turn off the main road to Hokio Beach Road. Main beach access is from Muaupoko Rd or Tawhiti St.
There is a notice not to park horse floats on the dunes, or in the childrens playground area, which I presume means at the large parking area there (Tawhiti St). Vehicles do drive onto the beach via Tawhiti St. Check it out first before taking a horse float to park on the beach (and please tell us)
Generally good riding surface on the beach. Riding north from here is excellent, taking you beside the Waitarere Forest, a restricted riding area which is fenced and gates are locked.
Near the Foxton racetrack - Donnelly road is off SH1. Approx 2.2km is unformed, traversing farmland to Hickford Rd.
There is a large parking area off Ocean Beach/Marine Pde roundabout. Beach access is at the southern corner of the carpark, or ride past the back of the surf club onto marine pde beach access.
Ride all the way north to Manawatu River, Foxton Beach.
Stay off the dunes, use official accessways only.
