Horse riding on Castlecliff beach is not formally recognised but is accepted as a long standing use. There is concern about responsible use, and riders should stay off the dunes and be aware of and away from nesting birds. Ride below the high tide mark at all times. West coast black sand beach with plenty of surf. Watch the tides.

Park at "North Mole" (a long waterbreak used by fishers), off the end of Morgan St. Large parking area, and easy turnaround.

42 Traverse Owhanga to National Park, Tongariro.

42 Traverse is an unformed road that runs through the Tongariro Forest Conservation Park, named after SH42 (an old logging route). Info from DOC, Tongariro, it has challenging terrain through fantastic native forest and the awesome Canyon valley, with superb views back to the volcanoes of Tongariro National Park. 46km one way between SH4 and SH47. Shared with cycles, walkers and vehicles.

  • Weather can change rapidly in this area and there are few exits so ensure that you are carrying sufficient clothing, first aid and other supplies to ensure a safe journey for yourself and your horse.

  • Dogs! - Dogs are only permitted on this trail if they have undertaken a certified Kiwi aversion course!

  • The T42 mountain biking, running and walking event is held annually in early May.

  • The track is open to 4WD vehicles each year in the summer from 1 December – 30 April

Trail conditions:

  • 46km one way

  • solid track surface. horse must be in fit working condition , well shod or good barefoot on stoney ground

  • some short gradients to river [rideable] shallow rivers in summer.and easy access.

  • need to take some food as takes 8 hours [with breaks] to complete.

  • river water fresh and clean.

  • not much, or no grazing for horses as native foliage. Provide a good feed to start with and electrolytes before hand on hot days as some steep climbs where horses did sweat.

  • Wet, slippery, and potentially snowing in winter

Access and parking :

  • About 16 km along SH47 from National Park Village, turn into Kapoors Road, continue for about 6 km to the start of the track at the road end.

  • no camping or yards
