east Caribbean States

  eastERN caribbean central bank:

I have lived in St. Lucia and therefore was attracted to this collective island ISSUE from way back. These notes are like the British West Indies series but you can acquire Choice UNC examples without breaking the bank. Think of them like your early Euro for the Caribbean. Another Commonwealth "gem" (or QEII must have) in my book.  Keep in mind that the SUFFIX letter designates which nation the note was issued from.  This means that some nations (suffixes) are more common (or tough) than others.

List of the nations identified up until 2008:

A is for Antigua (typically larger # issues)

D is for Dominica (typically smaller # issued)

G is for Grenada (typically smaller # issued)

K is for Saint Kitts (typically smaller # issued)

L is for Saint Lucia (typically larger # issued)

M is for Montserrat (typically smaller # issued)

U is for Anguilla (typically smaller # issued)

V is for St. Vincent (large & small batches issued)

For the $20 & $100 of 1965 series, the suffix (nation issued) is nearly irrelevant as nice examples in UNC can be scarce enough that you will just wish to obtain a high grade example.  The 1980's-1990's (2nd series) such as P-18m (below) have 2 designs. The first design does not include Anguilla on the map & most of these early notes are fairly easy to acquire.  The 2nd (modified design which include Anguilla) seemed to have been overlooked by collectors & can typically be a challenge to find in UNC. Lastly, but not least, is the flawed 1993 series which caused considerable confusion.   The TEN DOLLARS colour scheme closely resembled the FIFTY DOLLARS & were often changed inappropriately.  In addition to the colour scheme similarities the flawed markers (denomination value in #) overlapped a dark square & were a challenge to read (& distinguish) especially under dim light.  They were replaced in 1994 by a redesigned improved series.
