African banknotes such as the ones below are excellent additions to any World collection. Why should I collect notes from this continent? The answer is simple: most of the continent has undergone chotic revolutions countering stability. Currencies changed from imperial/colonial issuers to tough charter central banks series (from Pounds to Naira in the case of Nigeria). most of the French banknotes issued for North Africa (Algiers, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt) have stunning designs & are scarce from the get-go. The visual documental nature of banknotes makes documenting their transition both appealing & fascinating to view. Initial colonial issues were minimal to begin with. Having visual artefacts from from the "Imperial denominations" are challenging enough. To acquire early independent central bank series can be equally elusive. Most African environments were extremely humid and posed challenges to keeping currency in good condition (without mold or rust). Humidity & workhorse handling meant they have been "tough" to "impossible" to acquire certain series in nice appealing grades. I added the image of a super tough 50 Francs from Rwanda-Burundi which features a lioness on the front. This nation's currency lasted only 2-3 years so I was happy to secure a VF example! It has since moved to a happy new home!
Some older generation notes were shipped out in high grade, like the ones below, & these can be obtained at affordable prices. The tiny island of St. Helena had small issues printed but as a Commonwealth currency featuring QEII, it is one of those notes to collect.
Take the St. Helena, the South African or Zambian links for the notes I have from these 3 countries.

Biafra is one of those brief series (like the Rwanda-Burundi release) and remain popular driving prices high. I have seen these, Kenyan, RSA, Nigerian (& so many other African notes) gain particularly. I always seek the 1950-1970 series when offered in UNC!
