Thanks!

Although

it is difficult to begin listing all my sources of information I have drawn upon over the past four + decades of collecting, but I will attempt to cover some of the key figures who've helped one way or another:

First, and foremost, I have to thank the publishers Charlton Press who have published Canadian Government Paper Money. When I first picked up a Charlton catalogue, I had a true "eureka" moment. This would be my "bible" to collecting. I immediately started examining the prefix tables for each BOC (Bank of Canada) series issued from 1935 to date. I started to notice how some signature change-overs, such as the Gordon-Towers Z/D $10 which had a paltry 500,000 notes printed. I then started to read the introduction to each series and marvelled at how much background information (pertaining to how the series was released) I had overlooked up to that point. In later editions, the editors provided even more penetrating step-by-step techniques to grading banknotes. Each edition seems to improve upon the previous.

Next, I am grateful. to publishers of Krause Publications' Standard Catalog of World Paper Money (SCWPM). I have always marvelled at how much information can be gleaned by a decent catalog and I apologize if I have not attributed some info I picked up along the way to either publication. If you are wavering on whether to buy (or not to buy) a catalog, then I urge you to go to your local library and take a look at one first. Read it over carefully. I am certain you could not help but be impressed by all the detailed information these catalogs contain. It just rubs off on you (if you have any interest in the hobby). Although websites are fantastic additions to a collector's arsenal of info, they do not provide as comprehensive coverage as a catalogue. Nothing beats a hard copy at one's fingertips!

There are several excellent websites listed on the Notaphilyc Sites page. The Canadian Paper Money Forum (CPMF) and the Coin Community Family (CCF) have had major influences in helping me define my collecting goals. Several contributors there have helped me form opinions about which world notes to collect. Each website has its own forte (like the up-to-date data found on the CPMF's Serial Number Data Base), & I recommend all new collectors to find what they can from such sources as COINSANDCANADA. The greatest enjoyment can come from posting one's finds (acquisitions) on Facebook groups, IG , the above forums or by touring the Bank of Canada (BOC) Museum. Just remember to exercise caution since there will be many divergent social media takes on currency!

Besides the publisher/editors of the catalogues, I would also like to thank:

  • Steven Bell (from Banknote Certification Services or BCS)

  • Helder Jacinto for following my updates & his contributions in the past 2 years!

  • Hitesh Doshi (for fascinating perspectives on CDN banknote design elements)

  • the late Don Olmstead (for inspiration/honesty on what BOC notes to collect)

  • Gary Fedora (veteran collector who taught me many things)

  • David Sykes (for assistance with my Grading video)

  • Kyle Mathers at the Banknote Index

  • Brent Mackie (pioneer/creator of the Canadian Paper Money Forum)

And of course thanks to my collector friends who buy or swap banknotes with me! If I am missing someone then simply email this site and I will remedy this.

Thanks again!

James
