September 8-12
Hello Parents and Students,
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Daily 20 Reading Log: Students will begin reading a "just-right" book for 20 minutes each night. The book your child picks must be at an independent reading level. The goal is for students to read a chapter book. It is your child's responsibility to complete this log each day. Please sign this folder and send it back to the classroom every Friday.
Weekly Folder: Your student will come home every Monday (or first instructional day of the week) with a BLUE WEEKLY FOLDER. This folder will include dated pages with information about any missing assignments or behaviors we are working on at school. A parent/grown-up signature is required. Students will return the folder the next school day, unless absent. Blue folders are coming home today. I look forward to seeing all signed Blue Weekly Folders returned TOMORROW: Wednesday, September 9th.
Graded/Checked Classwork: Your student will come home each week with graded or checked classwork in their blue weekly folder. Any graded or checked classwork is yours to keep and review with your student.
OUR WEEK AT A GLANCE
Math: On Wednesday, students will have their first math test. This test will cover lessons 2-9. I will review these lessons in class on Tuesday. Your child will come home on Tuesday night with a completed study guide. Please assist them with reviewing the problems, studying is their homework. This may look something like asking problems verbally, writing similar problems down on a new paper, or covering up the answers and redoing the problem. The assessment given will be very similar to the study guide.
Reader's Workshop: We will begin our Benchmark curriculum Unit 1: Government for the People. Our focus will be answering the essential question: Why do people participate in government?
Writer's Workshop: Students will finish their first narrative titled My Summer. Also, students will learn how to write a well-constructed, 5 sentence paragraph. Students will be writing complete sentences using correct capitalization, spelling and punctuation. They will learn how to write a topic sentence, supporting details and a concluding sentence.
Science: Students will receive their Investigation Notebooks and learn some of the ways that scientists use notebooks. Then, students review the unit’s reference book, Handbook of Traits, which they will be using throughout the unit.
Social Studies: This week, students will continue with Week 3 in our Studies Weekly curriculum. This week we will learn about examining evidence and communicating conclusions. They will examine how to find, interpret and present information.
P.E.: Please dress appropriately on Monday for P.E. every week.
