Activity: Shaping the Culture
Work together in your groups to complete the following activity. The reading from Edgar Schein’s book titled “Organizational Culture and Leadership” will be accomplished prior to starting the lesson as part of student preparation.
a. Read Chapter 4, How Culture Emerges in New Groups.
b. Discuss the chapter as a group.
c. Prepare a briefing covering the following:
1. A summary of the chapter.
2. At least one example from a group member’s experience (or collective experiences) about how they have seen culture emerge from a group.
3. Examine the healthy and unhealthy aspects of that experience and explain the impact on its members and their ability to accomplish the mission.
a. Read Chapter 13, How Leaders Embed and Transmit Culture.
b. Discuss the chapter as a group.
c. Prepare a brief covering the following:
1. A summary of the chapter.
2. At least one example from a group member’s experience (or collective experiences) about how they have seen a leader embed and transmit culture in an organization.
3. Examine the healthy and unhealthy aspects of that experience and explain the impact on its members and their ability to accomplish the mission.
a. Read Chapter 15, What Leaders Need to Know About How Culture Changes.
b. Discuss the chapter as a group.
c. Prepare a brief covering the following:
1. A summary of the chapter.
2. Pick one of the Organizational Levels (Founding and Early Growth, Midlife, or Maturity and Decline) and provide at least one example from a group member’s experience (or collective experiences) about how they have seen culture change within an organization.
3. Examine the healthy and unhealthy aspects of that experience and explain the impact on its members and their ability to accomplish the mission.
