Situation
Intent:
The intent of this main point is for the students to be presented with a situation in the form of a Warning Order (WARNORD) representing a realistic but fictitious event/operation in which they, acting as the Operations Planning Team (OPT), have been tasked to support. In this part of the exercise, students will review their assigned operation (chosen by school/instructor), reflect on why the USAF would support the mission, and begin drafting the mission statement. The students will work in groups to draft separate mission statements; however, they must work together at the end of the main point (MP) and agree on a single mission statement to continue with. The work from this MP establishes the groundwork for MP3.
Instructions:
In this part of the exercise, you and your team will be acting as an OPT and are responsible for the planning and research needed to support an operation.
Read through assigned situation and WARNORD carefully, especially the commander’s intent.
Refer to the National Defense Strategy and National Security Strategy to find and provide justification for why the USAF would be tasked to support the operation. You must cite where you found the information.
Compose a background paper using this data to write a detailed justification to the OPT lead (instructor). The background paper must contain the following items:
Identify your tasked mission statement derived from the commander’s intent.
Provide a brief description of the event/situation and what it has endangered.
Identify why the USAF would be tasked to support the operation (i.e., what does the USAF provide that no other service can?).
Submit background papers to the command authority (instructor) and stand by for further instructions.
