MERLIN :
That girl…
…is no mage.
GUINEVERE :
No mage? But…
MERLIN :
Malduc was a mage.
His daughter
is only using artifacts still imbued with magic.
GUINEVERE :
She isn’t marked, is she? ( Magic doesn’t seem to affect her. )
MERLIN :
Perhaps not visibly so.
That, or she has a way to ward off the effects in her possession,
like Excalibur’s scabbard.
So many possibilities.
…
Morgan.
Have you identified the spell’s alphabet?
MORGAN :
It’s futhorc.
MERLIN :
Ugh, Germanic.
That’s classic Malduc, no surprises there.
Well, depends on the kind of Germanic, I heard Germany had changed quite a lot⎯
MORGAN :
Whether or not she is a mage,
she pulled off a translocation spell.
MERLIN :
I didn’t say she was harmless.
After all,
she managed to get past Camelot’s defenses.
MORGAN :
…
Do elaborate, Merlin.
[ silence. ]
GUINEVERE :
…What’s a translocation spell?
MERLIN :
It’s more or less what I use to appear and disappear at will. I go through the Otherworld, then come back to this one.
The kid wants to do the same with Camelot, only permanently.
GUINEVERE :
So Camelot will be
translocated into the Otherworld?
MERLIN :
Exactly.
MORGAN :
To make matters worse,
translocation requires a breach.
And through that breach, creatures from the Otherworld may cross over into ours.
It’s only a matter of time before Camelot disappears, and a nest of such creatures takes its place.
BRUNOR :
Alright.
So what’s the plan?
[ morgan and merlin stare at him. awkward. ]
BRUNOR :
…There is a plan, right?
MERLIN :
We must close the breach.
But to do that, we need to find the spell’s source.
The source is making magic converge to it, which widens the breach in turn.
So we’ll have to⎯
[ morgan whips her arm towards the spell's seal, and it vanishes. ]
MORGAN :
…Split up.
GUINEVERE :
Is it wise to split up in the face of danger?
MERLIN :
The spell’s source and the breach both have to be sealed by mages.
Besides, you’ll be safer with me than anywhere else.
Especially the sickly one over there.
GUINEVERE :
But Morgan⎯
MERLIN :
I trust her.
Morgan’s an expert, she can fend for herself.
Plus, she has Brunor and his incredible chugs.
His tits, his knockers, his⎯
GUINEVERE, AGLOVALE :
Are you drunk?!
MERLIN :
What? Brunor has bulging pecs, so Morgan has nothing to worry about. ( You touched them when he was carrying you. Don’t act all innocent. )
AGLOVALE :
What on earth are you talking about?! ( And how do you know he carried me?! )
GUINEVERE :
Merlin.
The girl…the mage…
…Will she be there?
And if we run into her…?
MERLIN :
We’ll have to deal with her.
GUINEVERE :
( …Was it…really her?
That poor child…
He seemed…
…so sad… )
MERLIN :
Here we are.
Hm, she managed to grow it through the chimney… Clever kid.
GUINEVERE :
Is she…still alive?
MERLIN :
Yes, but not for long.
The spell is complex, and
she’s feeding it as we speak.
I hope that the breach
didn’t let a monster through on the other side.
MORDRED :
( …What…
…is that thing…? )
MORGAN :
A dullahan.
It’s much worse than I imagined.
Beating back a dullahan is no small task.
BRUNOR :
My father fought a dullahan, once.
MORGAN :
And survived?
BRUNOR :
Barely. He very nearly didn’t make it out alive.
And he didn’t manage to defeat it.
He told me it was the fiercest fight he’d ever been in,
and he’d taken down giants before.
MORDRED :
( The Good Knight Without Fear…
…nearly died fighting this thing? )
MORGAN :
It just came through the breach, so it’s still weak.
It’s not as dangerous as it could be, but…
It’s still a fearsome foe.
BRUNOR :
How do we kill it?
MORDRED :
( Is he not scared?! )
MORGAN :
We can’t.
The best we can do is send it back from whence it came.
They’re intelligent creatures who possess some magical abilities, albeit limited ones.
You must not let it mark you with its blood, or⎯
[ brunor fends off a strike from the spine whip. the dullahan points at brunor, then makes a come-hither motion. ]
MORGAN :
Damn it!
Keep it busy!
No, not you, Mordred!
I need protection!
I must prepare a spell to restrain it!
We have to send it back to the Otherworld at all costs, for once it chooses you for a target,
there is no escape.
ROUND TABLE TRIVIA
Dullahan are solitary creatures, whose most notable trait is being without a head, which they often carry under their arm.
They’re generally riders, and use a severed spine as a whip.
They also possess rudimentary magic they use to hunt down their prey and steal their souls, on which they feed.
These malevolent creatures like to torment the humans they go after.
