BEDIVERE :
We’re on the right path.
If the weather stays on our side, we’ll get there tomorrow…
… but if your bad mood clouds it over, Mordred, we can kiss that notion goodbye.
MORDRED :
Is it such a chore to travel with me?
… All I wanted was to go on a quest.
BEDIVERE :
This is a quest. Of sorts.
MORDRED :
…A more prestigious quest, then.
Especially since I was only chosen because Gawain wasn’t available.
BEDIVERE :
You’re going to have to get used to it. Gawain’s always the first pick.
MORDRED :
She’s been off questing for months. Someone else could’ve taken her place, couldn’t they?
BEDIVERE :
Yes…
Someone like you.
Congratulations.
MORDRED :
…
BEDIVERE :
…
Listen…
Technically, I’m not anyone’s first choice to be an emissary either, not when it comes to diplomacy.
But since Guinevere left, someone has to pick up the slack.
Someone tactful, that is. Diplomacy’s no laughing matter.
You should take some notes. And translate all the Gaelic for me, will you?
MORDRED :
Do the Germanic speak Gaelic, now?
BEDIVERE :
Not that I know of.
But⎯
?? :
HEY!
Ah, I did think we’d run into each other here.
Good to see Arthur’s kept his promise of sending delegates.
MORDRED :
( Huh? )
?? :
Oh!
Wait, you’re…
[ he hops off his horse. ]
Mordred!
How you’ve grown!
[ he sets momo down. rip to son boy ]
Last time I saw you, you were still hiding in your mother’s skirts!
MORDRED :
Oh!
Uncle Uriens?
URIENS :
Ah, so you didn’t recognize me!
It’s been a damn long time, it has.
BEDIVERE :
…
URIENS :
…Bedivere.
BEDIVERE :
Uriens.
MORDRED :
… ?
URIENS :
There’s still some way to go before we reach the settlement. Have you got a place to sleep?
BEDIVERE :
To tell the truth, no.
We were going to camp out tonight.
URIENS :
Well, we were supposed to meet up at an inn.
Why not travel together?
MORDRED :
Uncle Uriens, what are you doing here, so far from Orkney?
URIENS :
Come, lad, I’m your uncle. Drop the formality, will ya?
Did Bedivere not tell you?
I’ve also come to parlay with the Germanic.
I represent the clan, as well
as your mother, actually.
If she hadn’t wandered off who knows where, she’d probably be here instead of me.
MORDRED :
…
I haven’t received word from her either.
URIENS :
…
Don’t take it the wrong way, boy.
It’s hardly a surprise. This is your mother we’re talking about.
On the other hand,
I’m surprised to see that Welshie here. I thought Arthur would send someone more… suited to the situation.
MORDRED :
How so?
URIENS :
Oh, you know.
MORDRED :
…
I don’t expect you two to get along. Not after what happened with Owain…
URIENS :
…
We’re here.
Let’s get some rest.
PERCIVAL :
Sir, you must be quite hot under that armor;
Must you wear it?
TRISTAN :
Of course!
We’re waiting for a knight here, I need to be ready.
PERCIVAL :
We don’t even know if any knight’s going to come this way.
TRISTAN :
Nonsense! Palamedes will be here sooner or later, she sent word ahead.
She’ll never turn down a little challenge!
PERCIVAL :
( It’s been six months since we left Camelot.
That’s six months Sir Tristan hasn’t been questing, and he’s getting impatient.
I became his squire shortly after that.
Sir Lancelot welcomed us into Benwick, in her castle of Joyous Guard.
She swore she would protect us, and we swore in turn not to cause her any trouble.
I was there when we broke the news to Dame Viviane and Dame Iseult.
Dame Viviane looked quite cross with it.
Then, she left.
I think she was pretty annoyed with the whole situation.
Life in Benwick can be strange.
( I’ve never eaten so much cheese in my life. )
I got used to it, though.
The learning’s been the hardest part. )
GUINEVERE :
Scotland functions through a clan-based system.
Clans make for very tight-knit communities, but also insular ones, as one might say.
Each clan has its own tartan, and each kingdom is made up of several clans.
PERCIVAL :
Do I really have to remember them all… ?
GUINEVERE :
All you have to know is that they have quite the influence on the monarchy.
And their might is always an asset to the royal clans. They’re famous for their feuds, some of which go back generations.
No outsider to the clan may become its chief. And each chief works in tandem with a head druid, an ollam… even though the druids have lost their influence, lately.
ISEULT :
You know, Guinevere,
it threw me off when I arrived in Britain.
GUINEVERE :
Oh, did it?
ISEULT :
Yes. Druids are so influential in Ireland,
I never thought they could fall out of favor here.
My own mother is a druid!
She taught me much,
about plants most of all.
GUINEVERE :
Ireland wasn’t as affected as Britain by the Germanic landing on our shores.
Their social system ended up influencing ours, and it’s…
PERCIVAL :
… a bad thing?
GUINEVERE :
…
In and of itself, it’s neither good nor bad.
The end of an era is not always a bad thing.
But sometimes, it can be hard to bid the past goodbye, especially when change is forced upon you.
PERCIVAL :
( It’s all so complicated.
Being king means perpetually trying to strike a balance between kingdoms utterly unlike your own. It’s trying to keep a precarious equilibrium, and for what… ?
As long as I don’t have the answer to that question, I have no right to the crown.
Sometimes, we get visitors,
along with some news.
Since the queen left, public opinion has been divided,
as has the Briton crown.
Dame Guinevere has been rather preoccupied with it all.
I’ve been training for combat more and more.
Sometimes, Sir Bors is the one overseeing my training. )
BORS :
I’m a little rusty…
PERCIVAL :
( He tells me about Galahad. )
BORS :
It pains me that she did not follow us, it’s true…
But she’s following her honor in this, and for that, I’m very proud of her.
She must make for an excellent knight, I’m sure of it.
PERCIVAL :
( It’s pretty heartwarming.
I’m glad to be here,
with everyone.
But maybe I shouldn’t get used to it. )
[ cut back to the forest. ]
PERCIVAL :
Sir, someone approaches!
TRISTAN :
Excellent!
Let’s go!
PERCIVAL :
( Sir Brunor?!
What is he doing here? )
TRISTAN :
Oh!
Stop right here, sir knight!
I stand watch upon this road, and I find you a rather suspicious fellow!
If you wish to go on your way, you’ll have to go through me!
BRUNOR :
I’d gladly accept your challenge, sir,
but I can’t waste my time here.
Soon, I’ll have to fight to help my brother.
It’s a matter of life or death.
TRISTAN :
Dinadan…
…is in trouble?
ROUND TABLE TRIVIA
The Scottish clan system takes precedence over the established social order.
SCOTTISH KNIGHT : I was banished from my clan… (ue ue)
SCOTTISH PEASANT : boo!! tomato tomato tomato!!
Being part of a clan is of utmost importance. Therefore, even commoners are more highly regarded than the clanless, who are viewed as outlaws.
Alliances between clans from a same kingdom are also very important, especially in order to repel foreign invasions.
So does Orkney push back the Germanic invasion from its territory.
