ARTHUR :
…Where’s Palamedes?
KAY :
No idea.
ARTHUR :
And Dinadan?
KAY :
He’s on his way, he just needed…
…
…a bit of time.
ARTHUR :
…Very well. Will you lay out what we ought to discuss today, then?
KAY :
There’s the news from Cornwall, and Bedivere and Mordred’s report regarding the results of our diplomatic mission with the Germanic.
Plus the usual time for you to bring up your own requests.
EVERYONE :
…
ARTHUR :
My knights.
I gathered you here today so we could come to a decision as to what we ought to do.
You must have heard them already, but
we have received ill tidings from Cornwall.
Sir Tristan of Lyonesse, as well as Queen Iseult
have died, at King Mark’s own hand.
With that said…
…Tristan had turned his back to the Round Table.
He’d accepted Mark’s terms, and so we were in the process of negotiating his return…
…but nothing was made official. And so,
I cannot request for his body to be laid to rest in Camelot.
As for Mark, he is under house arrest by his own guard in Tintagel.
What we’ll need to do is⎯
DINADAN :
I’m ready, my lord.
ARTHUR :
Ready for what?
DINADAN :
To go get Mark and bring him to justice here, of course.
…
That was the plan,
right?
EVERYONE :
…
ARTHUR :
I’m… sorry, Dinadan.
Mark is under house watch in Tintagel, and we must consider our next course of action,
which doesn’t necessarily include bringing him here.
Tristan left the Round Table, and even though there were plans for him to return,
he did not make it back to Camelot to renew his vows.
Officially, he’s no longer part of the Round Table.
DINADAN :
…
So what?
ARTHUR :
So Mark did not act against the Round Table.
We have no authority to intervene.
DINADAN :
So who’s gonna do it?
ARTHUR :
Cornwall’s dukes.
Mark will likely be put under someone else’s guardianship,
and there will be talks to figure out Cornwall’s line of succession.
DINADAN :
Wait, you’re telling me
that Mark isn’t going to pay for what he’s done?
Not even a little bit?
So we’re going to let a murderer get away with it just because he happens to be king?
ARTHUR :
…
That’s not all, Dinadan.
I understand your anger. I also want him to answer for his actions.
What he’s done will no doubt lead the people to riot,
and Mark being without a legitimate heir, I am a potential heir to the throne of Cornwall. Then, we’ll be free to act.
DINADAN :
So… Promises, based on hypotheticals?
ARTHUR :
Proper procedure ensures legitimacy.
It’s more important than you think it is, if you want everything to run smoothly.
DINADAN :
I don’t give a shit about your legitimacy.
ARTHUR :
…Excuse me?
DINADAN :
You’re all the same, damn it!
“You’re a knight, a duke, a prince, so you have to behave…
…but if you don’t, it’s not that big a deal.”
You’re telling me I have to trust that you’ll deliver justice,
when you lot haven’t even managed to sort out the Round Table’s old disputes?
Look at us, for fuck’s sake! There’s four of us!
Between those who left, and those who got killed…
…And Gawain’s still here.
Are we waiting for her to slaughter her way through Wales
before we do something?!
ARTHUR :
Enough.
You forget yourself, Dinadan.
I’ve made myself clear on the measures we were going to take.
I won’t discuss them again.
DINADAN :
…
…Fine.
Then I’m out of here.
And from the bottom of my heart, Arthur,
go fuck yourself.
KAY :
Dinadan!
ARTHUR :
He made his decision.
Moving on.
KAY :
…
The… report on the audience with the Germanic.
ARTHUR :
Following this audience, I received an ultimatum. The Germanic wish for a seat at the Round Table, with the prospect of an alliance.
If we refuse, they’ll go and seek one elsewhere.
I intend to refuse their offer.
They don’t have as much power as they believe they do.
They’re vulnerable, and are mostly counting on reinforcements from the continent.
To make the balance shift, a fair share of Britain would have to side with them,
and so far, the response I got from other kingdoms was not⎯
MORDRED :
My lord…?
( Uh… )
If I may, I attended the audience with the Germanic, and⎯
BEDIVERE :
Mordred…
I don’t think now is the time.
ARTHUR :
I want to wrap this up today.
Mordred, if you have anything to say, do speak.
MORDRED :
…I’ve thought about this for a while.
The Germanic have been here for years and years, and I don’t think they’re going anywhere,
even if we push them back as far as we can.
Their home is not the land they come from, it's the land they live on now.
I think it’d be interesting for us to consider that alliance.
ARTHUR :
…
That is out of the question.
Anyone else?
MORDRED :
My lord, it would make us stronger, and⎯
ARTHUR :
I said no, Mordred.
MORDRED :
But I don’t understand⎯
ARTHUR :
Did you also forget your place, Mordred?
Or are you pushing for this alliance
because you mean to help them destroy the Round Table?
MORDRED :
…
GAWAIN :
I would like to apologize on his behalf, my lord.
He knows he has to behave as a good knight of the Round Table ought,
or face the consequences.
KAY :
There you are.
…
…What a shit day.
…Where do you think Dinadan’s gone off to?
BEDIVERE :
Damn if I know.
All I know is that he jumped onto his horse and rode off.
Headed for Tintagel, no doubt.
…
…I should’ve gone after him.
Tried to reason with him. Maybe then…
…I could’ve stopped him from ditching it all.
KAY :
Heh. You’re taking it personally because he’s one of yours.
BEDIVERE :
Maybe so. But I also feel powerless, because
how many of them are we going to have to bury?
PALAMEDES :
I’m sorry…
I heard there was a meeting yesterday morning.
I must’ve dozed off…
I hope I didn’t miss anything important.
