GAWAIN :
…You’re never going to just stay in the past, are you?
…No.
I’m not like you.
KAY :
Look what the cat dragged in.
Now you’re coming home?
GAWAIN :
And why are you up in the middle of the night?
KAY :
Because of Bedi.
He snores like a warthog. I took the opportunity to grab a bite.
Coming to pick up something to eat before you disappear again, are you?
GAWAIN :
Disappear? Don't be dramatic.
I’ll have you know I see to the weak and the needy quite regularly.
KAY :
Hm-hm.
And what about that?
The weak and the needy need those too?
I’d offer you another drink,
but I think you’ve had enough.
GAWAIN :
You great old fool, are you scolding me?
…
…I…
…just don’t want to think about it.
KAY :
…Gawain, you⎯
GAWAIN :
So many of my memories took place here, in these kitchens.
This is where we met, remember?
It was a different time, but I could almost draw a parallel to the present.
Arthur was also the only one who trusted me, back then. Even moreso after my duel with Pellinore.
And yet, I was the “best knight of the Round Table”...
What a joke.
KAY :
You are the best knight the Round Table’s ever had.
GAWAIN :
Look at you, getting all serious.
KAY :
You think I don’t see what you’re doing?
I remember the state you were in after your duel with Pellinore.
Keeping yourself busy drinking, wandering and wenching.
You take every burden upon yourself, even as you perform admirably in all your duties.
GAWAIN :
That’s rich, coming from you.
KAY :
That’s why I’m saying it.
I know how it feels to devote yourself to your king, to support him in his mistakes.
But I’ve never tried to convince myself that he’s never made any.
That we’ve never made any, even.
It’s inevitable.
You belong to the Round Table, and you’re the finest flower of chivalry.
You’re as devoted to Arthur as he is to you. You know that, right?
GAWAIN :
…I think of it, yes.
Maybe…that’s what keeps me going.
But…
…is it enough?
Is it worth it, Kay?
Is Arthur’s gratitude enough
if I can’t sleep at night?
KAY :
…C’mere.
You deserve to get some rest.
[ cut to the wee road trip!! ]
GUINEVERE :
I’m sure you would have preferred the bestowing of your prize to be grander.
Even so, I congratulate you on your victory.
MORDRED :
If Mother hadn’t decided to cut the tourney short despite Uriens’ protests, I doubt I would’ve won. I cannot accept this.
GUINEVERE :
And yet you did. Take it, I insist.
MORDRED :
Thank you, my queen.
GUINEVERE :
One more thing.
…I see what you’re trying to do, with Arthur.
It hardly seems appropriate to slander him so when you are one of his knights, is it?
MORDRED :
My queen, it’s not what you think⎯
GUINEVERE :
Do not take me for a fool, Mordred.
…Listen, I don’t want to see this as anything but resentment on your part, which I can understand.
Arthur did not know how to form a bond with you, let alone how to care for it.
I myself am the first to regret it. Everything would have been much simpler if he had.
I always did like spending time with you as a child, Mordred.
I’m sure that Arthur, too, would have grown fond of it.
MORDRED :
Are you trying to appeal to me with thoughts of what could have been?
Me, growing up happy at your knee, or Arthur’s?
Of course, Gawain would have been there. Perhaps even Dame Morgan, why not?
All she did was birth me, raise me,
and show me more love than Arthur ever would have.
GUINEVERE :
…
I’m not asking you to dedicate yourself to Arthur body and soul,
only to consider a bond that may yet grow and change.
I believe you two have much more in common than you think,
and that a good relationship between the two of you would be nothing but beneficial,
be it for you or the Round Table.
After all, Gawain is still his heir, but it isn’t set in stone.
MORDRED :
Come now…
Arthur gains nothing by legitimizing me.
Think of what the people’ll say when he acknowledges his incestuous bastard.
GUINEVERE :
That’s not what I said.
I grow weary of these courtly mind games, so let me be clear.
I can convince Arthur to make you his heir, without publicly mentioning your parentage.
You’d still be his nephew in the public eye, but you have to prove yourself worthy of that inheritance.
We have everything to gain.
You would be king, and lead the Round Table.
That way, Arthur would no longer have to fear Merlin’s accursed prophecy,
as you would have no reason to let the Round Table come to harm.
Does that sound reasonable to you?
MORDRED :
…
GUINEVERE :
You don’t have to give me an answer right now.
But think about it.
And for what it’s worth…
I really would have liked
to be at your side and raise you, Mordred.
MORDRED :
…
DINADAN :
Mordred.
Look who’s here.
