ENVOY :
Welcome to Ouistreham, sirs.
I shall be your interpreter, in the name of Jarl Claudin.
We chose to meet you here at the seaside, to make for a more pleasant chat.
We ask you to leave your weapons at the door upon entering the reception hall.
Please, follow me.
[ as they ride into the settlement, they hear the noises of a crowd and whispers as the germanic stare at them. ]
MORDRED :
…
INTERPRETER :
Jarl Claudin bids you welcome,
and thanks you for making this long journey.
Alongside Jarl Claudin of the Franks sits Jarl Beorhtric of the Saxons,
Jarl Ricmod of the Angles, and Jarl Alberich of the Jutes.
Each of them is here to represent their Brittonic settlement, and would like to inform you
that the recent series of attacks on your shores are a result of war on the continent.
BEDIVERE :
So they’re refugees?
INTERPRETER :
Perhaps, but mostly brigands.
You well know the cost of war.
BEDIVERE :
…
INTERPRETER :
Our jarls would like to stress the fact that these attacks have nothing to do with our people.
These newcomers come from the North Sea, and also target us in their attacks.
And so, our jarls would like to offer you
an alliance.
Our warriors to bolster your army,
in exchange for a right to sit at the Round Table,
and be acknowledged as kingdoms in our own right.
All jarls assembled here today stand ready to join you
and forsake all ties to their homelands.
MORDRED :
[ pensive ]
Their settlements…
…are sizable, especially in Benwick.
They’d make powerful allies.
URIENS :
Wait a minute!
An alliance against the Germanic currently in Scotland?
Are you looking to wage war?
INTERPRETER :
If it comes down to it, yes, we shall stand with you.
Just like you, we wish for these invaders’ assault to cease.
We also hope they themselves might be open to an alliance.
URIENS :
Hmpf!
So you don’t intend to chase them out?
Scotland already has its own inhabitants in our people.
Let us make an alliance⎯each on their own land.
INTERPRETER :
…
This too is our land.
These settlements are our homes, and have been for generations.
MORDRED :
…
BEDIVERE :
You think this is your home?
Let’s talk about it, then.
You live on our shores, in settlements that, despite being many, are far between…
…occupying land that doesn’t belong to you,
paid for in the blood of our people.
This is not your home.
You, the brigands of yesterday, are offering us your help against the brigands of today?
Demanding a seat at the Round Table and formal acknowledgement?
It’s not self-confidence you lot lack, is it?
INTERPRETER :
I doubt King Arthur would have such a clear-cut stance on⎯
BEDIVERE :
So you don’t know him at all.
We created the Round Table in order to unite Britain,
and, among other things, to face the growing threat of Germanic settlements.
We campaigned against your parents in wars that ended in bloodbaths.
Even if we wanted you here, do you truly believe Britain’s kingdoms would gladly
give up part of their lands to invaders?
Do you think knights who lost everything they had because of you
would welcome their enemies among their ranks?
[ the interpreter leans down to hear the jarl’s whisper. ]
INTERPRETER :
Jarl Claudin is pointing out that this is already the case.
Our settlements already sit on these lands.
And how many of your knights spilled each other’s blood, before they were bound together by the Round Table?
BEDIVERE :
…
Tolerating you isn’t the same as accepting you.
They were born on these lands.
You are colonizers.
INTERPRETER :
…
The jarls assumed you would have reservations.
Therefore, they would remind you that Queen Guinevere,
along with Lancelot du Lac, turned their backs on King Arthur,
and that two other knights were also exiled from the Table.
It would be a shame
for enemies of the Round Table to take us up on our offer.
BEDIVERE :
These knights have neither troops nor the authority to accept such an offer.
INTERPRETER :
For now.
[ silence. ]
The jarls believe it would be wise to inform Arthur,
and give him an ultimatum to consider our request.
Let us move on to other matters.
[ back to the DUEL baby ]
HERALD :
µHis Grace the duke of Vannes shall now speak!
DUKE :
Dear subjects,
it is with the king of Benwick’s blessing we hold this duel today!
LANCELOT :
If I’d known…
BRUNOR :
Hm?
LANCELOT :
I was told there would be a duel.
I was going to turn down the duke’s summons and offer to be Dinadan’s champion instead.
But when Tristan and Percival disappeared, earlier this week,
I thought Tristan had taken the offer.
I wanted to go up against him.
What a disappointment.
…
No offense.
[ brunor just stares at her in silence. ]
LANCELOT :
Have no fear, king of Estrangore.
I won’t go all out. You’ll be able to⎯
BRUNOR :
You act like someone who’s never gotten their ass handed to them.
It’s about time, don’t you think?
LANCELOT :
( Heh. )
HERALD :
The combatants will fight as per the rules of judiciary duels : first on horseback, then on foot.
They may only use their lances or swords.
The duel shall last until one of the champions surrenders, is rendered unconscious,
or dies.
The outcome shall decide which party is in the right.
Knights, do you swear to abide by these rules and fight with honor?
LANCELOT, BRUNOR :
I swear it.
DINADAN :
Bloody hell, this sucks.
If I’d known this would happen, I would’ve asked you to champion me.
TRISTAN :
[ sighs ]
Brunor’s tough, and Lancelot must have a plan.
Surely there’s nothing to worry about.
DINADAN :
I don’t want to watch Lancelot toy with my brother until she gets bored.
TRISTAN :
Fear is making you imagine the worst, Din…
You know something like that would be beneath her.
Besides, it’s been a while since I saw Brunor fight.
I’m looking forward to seeing what he’s got in store. ( Hehe. )
HERALD :
May the duel…
…begin!
ROUND TABLE TRIVIA
The Germanics & the island of Britain, part two.
Settlements are tied to their homelands by law and commerce.
[ regular trade routes between the two lands. ]
They are ruled by jarls (equivalent rank to counts), chosen by the continental monarchs, and have their own hierarchy.
Each Germanic tribe is different, often leading to temporary alliances or conflicts between them.
