MORDRED :
Ugh.
BEDIVERE :
Put this on your eye.
And drink this.
MORDRED :
What is it?
BEDIVERE :
White willow bark.
…
It’ll ease the pain.
MORDRED :
…
BEDIVERE :
You’re not used to taking hits, are you?
MORDRED :
Do you have to make it humiliating?
Thank you for not stepping in, by the way.
BEDIVERE :
What, poor little Momo needed to be saved?
By a one-armed Welshman, older and shorter than he is at that?
[ very precise diagram! ]
… You’re right. Next time, I’ll take care to dishonor you properly.
But Uriens did a great job of it, if you want my opinion.
MORDRED :
Oh, let me guess. You’re gonna say “I told you so”?
BEDIVERE :
You truly don’t know me at all, do you?
MORDRED :
It’s not like you tried to get to know me either, Bedivere.
BEDIVERE :
… Fair enough.
But I didn’t tell you to be wary of Uriens because he might get aggressive.
That was almost inevitable, even with his own nephew.
I said it because he doesn’t have the Round Table’s best interests at heart.
There’s nothing he loathes more than a compromise.
It’s what he hates about Arthur, who swears by compromises.
MORDRED :
…
I thought it was all because of what happened to Loth and Owain.
It’s hard to make compromises when you’ve lost both your brother and your child to the Round Table.
BEDIVERE :
…
What do you know about your cousin Owain?
MORDRED :
I knew her.
I attended her funeral.
And I know the clan believes you’re responsible for her death.
If only she hadn’t joined the Round Table, she wouldn’t have died on a quest.
BEDIVERE :
Is that what you think?
MORDRED :
No.
A knight’s fate is to die in battle.
Whether or not they belong to the Round Table.
No doubt Uriens would’ve rather had her here by his side, though.
BEDIVERE :
…
I doubt it.
Owain was a good knight, and her death pained me. We probably bear some responsibility for it, it’s true.
But when I think of Owain, and when I see Uriens…
… the only thing I can think of
is that he offered his daughter to the Round Table
in order to save his own skin at the battle of Penrith.
If I ever held any esteem for him, I lost it on that day.
MORDRED :
Is that truly what happened… ? No one ever told me this.
BEDIVERE :
He must be ashamed, so he’s made sure no one ever mentions it.
He swore allegiance to Arthur only because he was defeated and forced to do so.
So he keeps on making things difficult for him, all while Arthur tries to strike a balance
between all these rulers vying for their own interests.
That is why Arthur must be able to rely on his knights.
He must be able to rely on you, Mordred.
MORDRED :
He can count on me. I swear it.
But I still want to discuss the Germanic’s proposal with him.
I truly think it can benefit us.
BEDIVERE :
…
[ sighs ]
We’ll see.
We should go to Joyous Guard first, while we’re in Benwick.
Might as well take the opportunity to talk to Lancelot about what she’s done while we’re at it.
MORDRED :
Yes, let’s go…
…
Oh.
I was wondering why Uriens hated you so much.
It’s because you witnessed his dishonor, didn’t you?
BEDIVERE :
Mordred.
He hates me because I was born a peasant.
I thought that was obvious.
MORDRED :
O-of course, but…
He still called you a cupbearer…
BEDIVERE :
Well, if he thinks being a cupbearer is something to be ashamed of, he’s wrong.
After all…
Does a cupbearer not have the king’s absolute trust?
MORDRED :
…Maybe so.
BEDIVERE :
…Thanks for decking him, by the way. That felt pretty good.
[ back to the duel!! everyone cheers!! except percy. percy is going through it ]
LANCELOT :
You don’t disappoint, king of Estrangore.
It must make for a good show.
But I’m getting tired of this.
Should we perhaps discuss how this duel should end?
BRUNOR :
Stop playing around.
LANCELOT :
Far be it from me to do such a thing. I only want to⎯
BRUNOR :
And don’t call me king of Estrangore.
Here you are, stuffed full of pride, convinced you can’t be beaten.
I was just getting warmed up.
You want entertainment?
I’ll give you entertainment.
[ the crowd gasps. ]
LANCELOT :
Without armor?
Is that wise?
BRUNOR :
It’ll certainly make a good show.
LANCELOT :
…Very well.
Come at me, then.
DINADAN :
What kind of idiot takes off his armor like that?!
PERCIVAL :
That is very dumb.
TRISTAN :
It’s true…
But look at Lancelot.
I think…
… things have finally gotten interesting for her.
ROUND TABLE TRIVIA
The battle of Penrith was the last great battle of the rebels against the Round Table, sixteen years before the beginning of Gradalis.
That battle saw the death of Loth of Orkney, officially at the hands of Pellinore of Listenoise.
