[ kay and arthur beating the shit out of each other rip ]
BEDIVERE :
HEY!
That’s enough, you two!
I said enough!
You could at least wait for our knights to be buried before you start beating the shit out of each other!
[ arthur is still on the ground, panting. ]
KAY :
You still hit like you’re twelve⎯
BEDIVERE :
You!
Shut up, damn you!
…
As for you…
I hope you’re proud of yourself. That was definitely the time to weaken our ranks further.
ARTHUR :
…
Both of you are acting like they didn’t choose to leave!
What was I supposed to do?!
Beg them to stay?!
BEDIVERE :
…
All I have to say is this. If your knights no longer believe in you,
who else?
ARTHUR :
…
BEDIVERE :
I’m going to go back and handle this.
You two find a solution.
If I come back and you’re still fighting…
… I’ll have both your hides.
ARTHUR, KAY :
…
KAY :
… I love him so much.
ARTHUR :
Of course.
KAY :
…So.
Let’s talk?
[ cut to the queen’s knights squad!! ]
EVERYONE :
…
LANCELOT :
Did he hurt you?
GUINEVERE :
…
No.
But…
… I thought he would.
Thank you for intervening.
[ lancelot squeezes her hand. ]
( … I’m surprised that Percival is following us. I thought he wanted to attend the ceremony to the end… ? )
LANCELOT :
I can’t quite tell what he’s thinking.
Not now, and not in general, actually.
But I’ve seen him cling to Tristan for a while now.
He probably just followed him.
GUINEVERE :
Percival.
Come closer, please.
I wanted to apologize.
My speech only disrupted the ceremony.
[ silence. guinevere is perplexed. ]
GUINEVERE :
… There’s something else.
Arthur and I discussed the possibility of teaching you what you needed to know before your coronation.
I hope you don’t take your leaving with me as losing an alliance with the Round Table.
Your future status will of course allow you to renew it, if need be.
PERCIVAL :
…
… I don’t know what that alliance means.
And I don’t think I have it in me to rule a kingdom.
GUINEVERE :
Unfortunately, that choice is not yours to make.
Luckily,
one can learn to do it.
I can always teach you, of course.
Knight you, even.
PERCIVAL :
Knight me?
LANCELOT :
There’s a faction within the Round Table ⎯ the Queen’s Knights.
We swore an oath to protect the queen.
GUINEVERE :
It’s rather unorthodox, but there’s nothing stopping me from knighting you.
So, maybe once you’ve completed your learning,
getting knighted might give you the confidence you need in order to rule.
[ back to the worst brothers to ever do it teehee ]
KAY :
So, where do we start?
Guinevere, for instance?
ARTHUR :
…
KAY :
[ sighs. ]
You’ve always been like this, it’s terrible. Getting anything out of you is like pulling teeth.
ARTHUR :
Whatever I say, you’re going to act like I’m accusing you.
KAY :
So it’s my fault now?!
…
Alright, let’s take it from the top.
I’m your seneschal.
I’m your brother. I’m here to support you, so you don’t shoulder the burden of the crown on your own.
ARTHUR :
The crown’s one thing. My mistakes are another.
KAY :
Do you really want us to have this conversation again?
I take care of your mistakes, it’s my job.
You promise others gifts and banquets, and I’m here to deny them.
When you make the worst decisions you can, I’m here to either stop you, or claim them as my own.
I am the despicable seneschal so you can be the good king.
ARTHUR :
…
… I almost hit Guinevere.
KAY :
[ glares. ]
… Go on…?
ARTHUR :
I want to think I could not have done it. I didn’t, after all.
She knows about Mordred now.
She knows everything.
And she blamed me for keeping her out of it, as she should.
She always knew what to say, regardless of the circumstances, and this time…
She hits bullseye with every word.
I was childish.
I chose to blame her as well, because
I could not bear to face all my contradictions.
Because looking all the sacrifices, all the horrible things I’ve done in the eye,
all to safeguard a cause that’s bound to disappear,
isn’t it absurd?
KAY :
Arthur…
ARTHUR :
At Samhain, you asked me what was on my mind.
After we fought the giants, I had to confront my choices
and their consequences.
All those times I chose cruelty, indifference, in order to protect what we built…
All those times I chose the safer path and turned my back to my ideals.
KAY :
Did you really make that choice, or did you do as best you could with what you had? The more allies you have, the harder it is to keep them all happy.
Being king means making concessions for your people.
ARTHUR :
… Is it not in vain?
Pointless?
No matter what I do,
I will witness the fall of the Round Table.
And I keep trying desperately to stop it, but every time I try…
… it only seems to bring me closer to the inevitable.
KAY :
Like knighting Mordred?
If there’s one thing I don’t understand, it’s that.
How did that not seem counter-productive from the start?
ARTHUR :
Kay, he would’ve been knighted sooner or later.
By me, or someone else…
So… I hoped he could still be convinced to serve the cause.
To follow the ideals the Round Table carries, and what it represents.
Then there’s the pragmatic reason.
If all fails, there’s still the possibility
he could be killed in a duel.
[ kay stands up. ]
KAY :
What now?
ARTHUR :
Let’s let the situation settle for a while.
I’ll see what to do it later.
KAY :
And what about Mordred?
ARTHUR :
…
Let’s try to lead him down the right path.
After all…
… he really did want to be part of the Round Table.
ROUND TABLE TRIVIA
The Queen’s Knights are a faction within the Round Table, and act as the queen’s personal guard.
GUINEVERE :
[ was kidnapped during a business trip ] Oh, not again!
They were created at a time the queen was often targeted by belligerent or spiteful lords, who sought to weaken Arthur through Guinevere.
KAY :
I was the first knight of the Round Table and the first Queen’s Knight.
Nowadays, the remaining members of this now-somewhat old-fashioned faction are Kay, Gawain, Bors and Lancelot.
