TRISTAN :
So, we’ve got a few hours to kill before the tourney,
and I was thinking that you two should participate.
MORDRED :
Participate? In a clandestine tourney?
PERCIVAL :
Isn’t this all about the two of you winning the one match?
TRISTAN :
Oh, your participation - or lack thereof- will have no bearing on the endgame.
But it would be a very good opportunity to get some training in, wouldn’t it? No external pressure to win,
only to fight honorably.
MORDRED :
But there’s no honor in going up against commoners, is there?
TRISTAN :
There’s always honor to be found in adversity! Aah, for that alone, I miss real tourneys…
Oh, and…
As my current squires, I order you to participate.
DINADAN :
… What?
Don’t look at me, I have no power over him.
MORDRED :
The other way around, though…
You were rather quickly convinced to participate yourself.
DINADAN :
Huh?
You didn’t hear him right, Mordred.
Either I take part in the tourney, or, I quote, he duels and kills me.
( Tristan : “Better to die with honor than live a coward. <3”
Dinadan : “Back off, demon!” )
That's not convincing, that's a threat.
MORDRED :
Many knights would be honored to duel Tristan, you know.
DINADAN :
Blessed are the poor in spirit, right? <3
MORDRED :
Are you going to challenge his order regarding our participation, yes or no?
DINADAN :
Aww, Mordred, you’d have to be my squire for me to do that. I can’t keep his lordship from fighting against, ugh, plebs.
TRISTAN :
Din, stop.
In any case,
I’ll give you a few tips and pointers.
You won’t have much time to train, but try to put them to use as best you can,
so when you go in and fight,
we’ll be right there on the edge of the field, watching you with utmost confidence!
?? :
Hold him tight!
?? :
Yeah!
?? :
You, stop squirming!
TRISTAN :
Goodness, they're being slaughtered.
DINADAN :
Hey!
I don’t see how it’s fair to let them gang up on our squires.
SHERIFF :
Were your squires not ready to team up themselves?
It’s not against the rules, at any rate.
DINADAN :
So I could go and lend them a hand?
SHERIFF :
That would be against the rules. You’re not an apprentice, sir,
and if your squires are too weak to hold their own,
it’s their problem and theirs alone.
DINADAN :
Of course.
TRISTAN :
Don’t worry, Din.
Their swords are blunted,
they aren’t in much danger,
and it’ll be a good learning experience.
DINADAN :
…
Humiliation isn’t that great a teacher, Tristan.
TRISTAN :
You call it humiliation.
I call it an opportunity.
MORDRED :
Gn…
?? :
Stay… still…
?? :
So, the Scotsman’s giving you trouble? He’s a piece of work, it's true.
I think the Welsh bloke gave up, though,
All that's left is to make him eat dirt.
But that wouldn’t be much fun, would it?
PERCIVAL :
( I don’t understand…
… this hostility. )
TRISTAN :
The core of knightly combat is to challenge one’s opponent with honor. So you must know the limits, of course, but you shouldn’t hesitate…
… to keep them on their toes.
?? :
What?!
You dirty little⎯
MORDRED :
Ah!
?? :
Come back here, you bastard!
SHERIFF :
William is out.
Please exit the field.
TRISTAN :
Oh!
Well done, guys!
MORDRED :
Just one knee to the ground and you’re out, then.
PERCIVAL :
We have to try to fight as a team, Mordred.
MORDRED :
Given our lack of coordination, that’s a bad idea.
PERCIVAL :
But⎯
MORDRED :
We can try again some other time.
For now,
to each their own seems like the safer strategy.
PERCIVAL :
Mordred, wai⎯
?? :
Forgot about me, Welshie!
PERCIVAL :
( Oh no!
I’m going to get thrown out of the game,
all because I can’t…
… put one foot in front of the other… )
TRISTAN :
Hesitation is making you lose your balance, Percival.
Lamorak taught you to hold yourself in a certain way,
and you're trying to stick to it at all costs by going against your reflexes.
Follow your instincts.
You know what you’re good at better than anyone.
SHERIFF :
Tom, out.
Ann, out.
MORDRED :
Percival isn’t out of the game yet…?
Huh?
… What’s with this ridiculous stan⎯
Where did he come from?!
SHERIFF :
Griffin, out.
Mordred, out.
MORDRED :
Damn it…
?? :
Well, looks like it’s just the two of us now, Welshie.
PERCIVAL :
Mordred…
?? :
Lemme tell you, I’m not gonna go easy on you, Welshie.
PERCIVAL :
(It’s heavy…
… and undoubtedly harder to wield,
but it’s better than hitting the ground. )
Come on, then.
?? :
… You’re not used to carrying a sword, are you?
A bastard sword’s too heavy to wield in one hand,
or to block a flurry of blows with.
PERCIVAL :
Ah!
(It’s too…
heavy… )
?? :
You highborns are so arrogant.
And you take so much pride in that honor o' yours.
So I’ll defeat you fair and square,
lordling.
So everyone can say
that you got your ass handed to you by a blacksmith’s son.
SHERIFF :
Percival, out.
Tobias wins the apprentices’ match.
ROUND TABLE TRIVIA
Before becoming a knight of the Round Table, it is customary to be a page, then a squire-in-training, then a squire.
Squires of the Round Table are effectively in the service of every one of its senior members and can be requisitioned at will.
Galahad, Bors’ squire, very popular among more active knights.
Mordred, Gawain’s squire, but never requested by others.
It’s uncommon for a squire to be requisitioned if they aren’t done with their training yet, but it’s not not allowed either.
That is why Dinadan was allowed to bring Percival out on a quest, even though he’s still in training.
